Ref. XP SP3
Ref. Dell Latitude 840C Laptop w/1Gig RAM

I need a Free XP SP3 Friendly Anti-Virus. I tried both AVG & AVAST & Both of them ran my CPU @ 100% Duty Cycle!!!!

I used AVG for years, but the newest version is Not XP compatible (Only works if it uses Every Single CPU cycle!!!!). So I dumped AVG & installed AVAST. Same problem. So now I'm not using Any A/V program.

Any recommendations on a A/V program that plays nicely with XP?

Sure. Microsoft Security Essentials works great with XP.

I'll try it.

This old laptop is using OEM XP SP3, so MSE will probably work.

Hopefully MSE doesn't require the CPU to run @ 100% duty cycle.

Even MSE, is better than running Barefoot!!!

I've had MSE running on an old Toshiba Satellite with XP SP3 since MSE was released, with zero problems. I also have it running on the other five computers in our house. It doesn't rate as high as some of the others out there but it is very light on resources, you won't even know it's running in the background.

What is your ISP?? Do they offer a suite of security programs as part of their support.Almost all of my clients used this service from AT&T, Comcast, Hughes and so on. Most common is MacAfee as AT&T has a whole raft of blockers, firewalls and even some network tools for the home network. Yes, some, MacAfee included have a load of stuff running in the background, and each has it's pros and cons. I have had ZoneAlarm for ten years and find it pretty comprehensive and a very good teaching tool.

Personally, I don't even bother with the watered-down security programs ISPs offer. Comcast offers some Norton thing for free, but I've never used it.

My Philippine ISP is Smartbro. No, they don't offer anything more than "occasional" internet connection (They turn off their equipment Every Night). I have the fastest internet connection in the city. On a GOOD day, I can get 220Kbs. On a slow day, I can't even get my E-mail. All that irritation for only P1000 ($25)/mo!!!

I Loved Zone Alarm, until the code was changed so that it consumes 100% of CPU cycles.

In My opinion please don't go with free antivirus because by using free antivirus you didn't get support from the anti virus support team at any time.

I had a few units that maxed out the CPU cycles too and I found it to be ZA had overlooked one of the ports used for an XP svchost. An uninstall and a clean download and it worked fine. MacAfee is loaded with added processes but I look at it this way. Everything must pass through the ISP and if they offer a security suite, it would be tweaked for their platform and support any OS. This is the first line of support, making sure any email or uploads are clean, the same would go for downloads and incoming e-mail. Both AT&T and Comcast offer MacAfee.

Since Avast is giving you a problem, try ClamAV. I used it for bit before going for Avast.

LOL!!!!!! There Are NO ISP Security Suites used in Philippines. That would require that the ISP's Spend money, which they are loathe to do. BTW: AT&T & Comcast don't operate in Phils.
