First, I apologize as this is my first post on here and I am unsure if this is the appropriate place as I don't know if it is a virus or an issue with software compatibility. My mother's friend has an eMachine that is about 5-6 years old. Recently, she received notification to update and renew McAfee Internet Security, which she did. She turned her computer off and when she turned it back on the next day, she was no longer able to download anything from the Internet (Internet Explorer 8). I verified that nothing can be downloaded (tried downloading more recent versions of IE, Malwarebytes, Chrome, etc.) Additionally, when you type in "hotmail.com" or "gmail.com", it simply loads as a blank white screen. I should mention that when you first launch Internet Explorer 8, it warns you about the security settings being too low, her settings are on medium-high. I tried to open McAfee and all that happens is a blank white window (the icon in the system tray will not produce any response when hoovering over it or clicking it). I then tried to run the system in safe mode. That didn't seem to make any difference. The final thing I want to mention is that all of her shortcuts on her desktop were non-functional. I was able to get those fixed by creating new ones, but it was weird that all of them stopped working.

I would greatly appreciate any advice!

I would uninstall McAfee. Then see if things return to normal, aside from the PC complaining about no AV.
If you can now load up IE and surf the web, including DLing, then you are ready for the next step.

You will now have to go thru the hassle of re-installing McAfee and doing all the upgrades. This will probably mean you will have to phone them... so have documentation ready.

Or you can stop throwing good money after bad and just install any of the free AV's out there. MSE is good (found here http://www.microsoft...curity/mse.aspx ) and Avast! is good (found here http://www.avast.com/en-us/index ).

Hi, pjkrenz, and welcome to the forums.

I'd like to add something to Elfbane's excellent suggestions.

After you've uninstalled McAffee, use System Restore to return Windows to it's pre-McAffee condition.

Remove your antivirus and try another antivirus for solving your problem. If your problem is still appearing then you have to make a contact with your " Antivirus Support " team.

Hey pjkrenz !

IF you are to uninstall your current antivirus solution , please use their respective Uninstall tool
to make that all the files are safely removed from your system in order to prevent any installation
problems for the next program to be installed.

Even if you are to use the Same program, use their uninstall tool. This is a recommended procedure.

To download the MCPR.exe you'll need to remove all traces of McAfee :
