Upgrade Hdd

I need to upgrade my HDD to a larger one. I would like to install both on the IDE bus. My problem is that although the original drive seems to be working fine(OS XP) it will not clone due to some sector errors and the XP recovery console does not work on it either. What I would like to do is use the existing drive as usual but load OS XP on the other drive and rebuild it using the original drive or from backups. Even though the new drive will be the slave, will it be possible to just go into the bios to designate the boot to go to the new drive for rebuilding and then change back to use the original drive for normal operations till I get the new on rebuilt? Or do you know of some problems with this scenario. Thanks any info appreciated

Hi mvrj, and welcome to the forums.
My suggestion would be to set your new HDD as master, old HDD as slave. Disconnect the old HDD and install XP, updates, and programs. Reconnect and use the old HDD with this caveat: if it's showing enough sector errors to prevent cloning your backed up data may not be truly safe. I personally would create a partition on the new drive and transfer all my data to it, or use a backup utility to do that automatically.
Just thinkin' out loud with you...

If you can, transfer your files to another drive in the meantime. It's always a good idea to have a backup anyway.
