Windows Live Mail (not to be confused with Windows Live Hotmail) has been working well enough for me, and it's free.

For me, it all got easier when I gave up on local email clients and starting using webmail exclusively.

Hi,

Try Pegasus Mail. It's reliable and complex filter rules can be created with it. I used it for a time and was satisfied.  It's good to have an alternative if something's wrong with the webmail and it can't be accessed. Other alternatives are i.a. The Bat, Eudora (used that one, too).
