How can i get rid of XPsp2 it's like a cockroach that won't go away! I can't get to DOS without being in Windows! Any idea how to kill this thing. What if I loaded 98 on a second HD could I get to DOS and format the other HD? I'm running a Dell that I got 2nd hand and they won't give me any answers. There is something wrong in the registry and it won't recognize the modem. The modem loads all the way but it can't be seen by aol. I would appreciate any help.

Hi Gnolw64. Okay, the main question is......Do you TRULY want to go back to 98 or are you just having issues with XP?If you TRULY want to go back to 98, I have to warn you that the majority of software applications you use within XP will not work in 98. Also, you will not be able to do a dual boot setup as you eluded to....load 98 on a second HDD.There are two options for you.- Do a downgrade from XP to 98 (If the system originally had 98 and Windows XP was installed as an upgrade)http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308233/en-us- Full uninstallation of XP and an installation of 98http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314052/en-usIf; however, you are just frustrated and really want to keep XP, please post all of your System Specifications and the error messages you get and we can try and help you.

I don't know what happened but the modem quit and I replaced it. It went through the the new hardware wizard and says the device is functioning properly. When I initialize aol there is no modem present. Dell has a modem test installed and also a modem helper. The modem helper will not run. I am using a 56k modem the results of the test are as followsC:DOCUME~1OWNER~1.FELLOCALS~1TempModemTest.txt6/13/2007[Registry Information]Register : HKEYLOCALMACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUnimodemDeviceSpecificConexant HCF^ NOT FOUNDRegister : HKEYLOCALMACHINESYSTEMControlSet001EnumPCIVEN14F1^ OKRegister : HKEYLOCALMACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ServicesWinachcf OK[Modem Information]Modem SoftV90 Data Fax Modem registered on the port : 3Modem SoftV90 Data Fax Modem registered on the port : 3Error ---> Modem name not found in registry[Port Information]Error ---> Modem not detected in registryOpen com : 3ATI0 56000 OK ATI1 255 OK ATI2 OK OK ATI3 SoftK56VB2.1_V7.12.09 OK ATI4 SoftV90 Data Fax Modem OK ATI5 181 OK ATI6 SoftK56 CModem Version 12 Rksample Version 342 OK ATI7 255 OK ATI8 Jun 17 2004 # 15:55:03 OK ATI9 USA OK [Dialtone Information]Dialtone Test modem --> Error ---> No Dialtone detected[Test Hardware]

Okay, I thought you received a Windows error message. That error message seems specific to the modem. I have some questions for you.- Have you contacted the modem manufacturer?- Have you attempted to run System Restore to return to a previous date?- What are your system specifications? Primarily, what Service Pack do you have? Memory? Processor? etc.

Okay, this is very odd. It seems like the modem drivers within Windows are either gone or corrupted. Short of doing a System Recovery or Reinstall, I am not sure.- You mentioned that you tried System Restore. This may be a dumb question but did you set the System Restore to a date prior to when you first noticed these problems?

Thoughts1] contact AOL if ya really want to use them. I am presuming that you have them as your chat and email server? Accessing them off cable, or are you hooked into their du or dsl for Net access? It looks like a lot of your error messages, which are off "a 2nd hand Dell" don't have the AOLsubscribe.Point of note, PC3200 will run [400 Mhz]. Mobo is blocked after 3200, sigh.Your errors have nothing to do with SP2.

I went several weeks prior to the failure to do the restore. I got this second hand and do not have the backup disk. Thats the main reason for wanting to go back to 98

Well, going back to 98 will do more harm than good and will frustrate you more than you are right now.Follow Knifeblade's suggestions. One thing I am thinking is that you mentioned you are running a 56K modem. Are you on broadband or are you on dialup? If you are on broadband, why are you using a 56K modem?Since you do not have the recovery disks, the only other thing I can think of is to go to Dell's website and update the modem drivers directly through Dell. You do not have to go through tech support to get to the drivers. Also, a more of a long stretch is that the modem itself is bad. Have you replaced the modem? I am still perplexed about the 56K situation.

mphenterprises & gnolw64 - this may sound like a crazy question, but if it is an internal modem, and you are hooking it to the telephone system with a standard telephone line, are you sure you have the telephone cord plugged into the correct socket on the back of the card? Most internal modem cards have two, one for the line coming in, and the other to plug a regular telephone in (the out door). If you plug the cord from the wall into the out socket, the modem will not find a dial tone. Also, have you plugged that cord from the wall to the modem into a telephone to see if you get a dial tone?.Until last October, 56K dial up was all I had, now its my emergence backup when the weather gets bad and covers my satellite receiver with rainy clouds.

Hi RGreen. A very definite possibility. Thank you for posting. I wasn't even thinking like that. It just may come down to a wrong connection...

I've lost count of how many times I have done it in the dim light under a table or desk. A sharpie making a mark makes it easier to see, especially after the modem mfgs went to the faint stampings marking the phone socket from the line.

I wish that was it! Believe me I checked that one more than once even though I have a phone plugged into the modem also!! I'll try Dell's downloads and see if that works I'll be to let you know the outcome. I've removed and reinstalled this modem so many times that I'm leaving the side off of the box! The modem is good. I installed it into this one and had NO problem at all. Thanks for all the help I'm sure I'll be back whining though!!!!

Grasping at straws again. Have you tried different slots. Somewhere in the past, I seem to remember that modems would work in certain slots, but not other. I have a USB external modem that will work when plugged into one of the front USB ports but not if plugged into any of the 4 rear ports. I solved it by taking the internal modem out of another machine, and putting the USB modem on it. The USB modem is now out in the storage building. HP support said it was a bad modem, US Robotics said it was a bad MB. Everything else works in the rear ports, so I am no longer concerned with it.

My gut is still leaning towards somewhere, and at some time, the modem drivers for that computer were either inadvertently removed or became corrupted. Since you said the System Restore didn't work, if a driver update/reinstallation, does not work, maybe you should go back to the person who gave you the computer and ask him or her for the recovery discs. Also, you did not answer the question as to whether or not you have broadband or dialup...

In all of this I don't recall a brand and model of modem. How does the modem show up in the device listing? Click on Start -> Control Panel ->(dbl click) System -> hardware tab -> device manager -> (click on + in front of modems) -> (dbl click) modem name -> driver tabWhat is the date of driver? Who supplied the driver?

I'm back! OK i'm still on dial-up. Cannot find previous owner. Have tried all of the slots. Modem brand is Conexant Softv90 data fax modem The location it shows is PCI slot 2(PCI BUS! device 5 function 0) Also says device working properly. Driver Microsoft version 7.12.9.0 date 7-18-03. I have a driver from conexant but when I try to install it through the device manager it says that it can't find a better driver. when I try to manually install the Conexant driver with it's setup it can't find the modem! One more thing is that the modem is on COM 3 but COM 3 doesn't show up in ports (Com and LPT) in device manager. Also it is sharing IRQ 17 with Soundmax integrated digital audio yet there are no conflicts.
