My AVG anti-virus has posted a note saying kernel32.dll has changed, with no other info. Is there a 'fix' for this. I'm running a H-P with Windows XP. Everything seems normal

Did you update service packs. That might be a cause.

there was a microsoft update a couple days ago, but I'm wondering why i'm getting this message .I used Reg. cure and still have this message. No problems yet though

Hi shiprock520. Do not do anything at this point. AVG will post any changes to your system, whether automatic changes or manual changes. My AVG scans shows four separate line entries regarding changes. If you do not see any negative effect in your computer's performance nor do you any virus alerts, let it be. You may inadvertently reverse something that should be changed.You know the old saying, "If it ain't broke..."

Sounds like a plan mph, if anything goes wrong I do have a Maxtor External back-up, thanks for letting me know about AVG, I do like it over Mcafee.

Opalit, I don't know if that's a symptom but if you check out the 'desktop' forum then go to 'favorites' thread, you'll see my desktop is slowly screwing up. But like I say, I don't know if that has any relation to what is happening now. I'm saving everything on my external HD in anticipation. You might try P.C. Recovery, but I always have to reintroduce my printer and scanner (among other stuff) to my P.C. all over again everytime-Shiprock

Hi Opalit. You can't just say that you have the same problem. Please elaborate as to what your problem actually is. This will allow others to better troubleshoot for you.

As I was replying to the problem specified that AVG was reporting Kernel32.dll changed, I had the same problem as this. I have now found the source of the problem, it is caused by Microsoft update KB935839 changing the Kernel32.dll file, AVG reports this change, what I have not found out is why AVG does not report the change on my 2 Laptops, both have had this update applied.I have tried removing the update, when removed, AVG no longer reports kernel32.dll as changed, when update re-applied then AVG reports kernel32.dll change.

Opalit, let's not split hairs here. Simple truth...AVG reports all system changes from one scan to the next.As you saw when you removed the update, the report went away. I do not know about what you are concerned.Regardless of what happens with someone else, if your particular system has a system change that AVG feels necessary to report, it will report that change. There is no error, no warning message, no need for concern.

What drew my attention to it and run AVG, was the fact that the when I was editing the database through a form, the fields of the record I was accessing in the Access database suddenley filled up with chinese symbols, after getting out of the database. I decided to do a system restore, the system restore did not work, always has before.After removing this update, database works OK, system restore works OK, AVG does not report any viruses or changes, AVG antispyware does not report anything, Windows defender does not report anything.Everything is OK without this update, I have now removed this update from list of updates to install until it is safe to install.The fact is there may be some hidden nasty on my machine that is linked to this update, this update does not cause any problems on my Laptops

:rolleyes: We, as a general computer public, have to get out of the mode that every change or notification is a negative. Opalit, that report is INFORMATIONAL ONLY. That is one of the reasons that AVG is such a good, free, application.I personally have five (5) items reported, including the kernel32.dll change. I also have user32, shell32, ntoskrnl, and driveretchosts changes. None of these are cause for alarm. My system is running at peak performance levels.I run a full cache of scans every Saturday and I always come up clean. I have been using AVG for years and I know how it functions. This report is informational only and nothing more.There is nothing lurking in your computer. You have run three very good and thorough scans and found nothing. Unless you specifically notice a negative change after the addition of that Microsoft Update, that you are concerned about nothing. I am not sure how else to say the same thing.Now, if you are so bent on thinking that there is something in your computer, I can suggest three more scans for you to run to ease your concerns or if you find that the specific update is not crucial to your computer, than leave it off.

I am still not convinced, If AVG reported the change on the Laptops then I would be convinced, I will do a factory restore when I get around to it.I will only be happy when I have a machine that does not shout warnings at me.Can not grumble though, had 3 years of virtually trouble free computing.

"To each his own.":-) I am not going to try and convince you of anything else. I have been in around computers and software for a long time. I will say this, eventually, after you do the restore, you will run into another "message" from some application. It may be AVG, it may be something else. The fact is, you have to learn how to decipher what is informational and what is cause for alarm.Look luck with your system and please, post if you have any other questions or "concerns." :wink:

I have been repairing computers since 1970 when we use tape and cards to program them, repairing PC's since 1986.This is not the first time Anti-virus programs have not spotted a particular nasty, unitl it is flying around a lot more in the wild. or in this case, no there is something wrong, but does not no exactly what.It is also not the first time a Virus has actually come down from the Microsoft Update site either.So we will wait and see how many other people start to get peculiar things happening to their PC. with this update in place.

AVG reported kernel32,user32,shell32 and ntoskrnl.dll all changed, I removed KB935839 and only kernel32.dll was no longer on the list, but it did show that the Windows Update was responsible for the change. So I ran Windows Update on my laptop, and because I had just updated a week ago the only update it wanted to make was KB935839 again, I let it, I rebooted, I ran AVG and sure enough it showed a change to kernel32.dll again. So at this point, as much as I don't like doing so, but not noticing anything overtly wrong, I have gone ahead and hit F3 in AVG and accepted the changes for the four files, and so be it.Jack
