Hi totallydude. Please be a bit more specific when you post so that everyone can try to assist you. These seem like two separate problems. I have some questions for you:- What is the exact error message that comes up during the Windows Updates?- Are you using the standard Windows Add/Remove utility or a third party utility?- Have you ever seen the programs that are not listed now in the Add/Remove utility?Once you post these responses, we can proceed from there.

Try this free Utility:Add/Remove ProThis will show you every program available. It will even show you programs that are not fully uninstalled.

Okay, this is very odd. Now, depending on the Operating System you have, I have found several links from Microsoft related to the Add/Remove Utility. Look them over and if they apply to you, follow the directions within the link:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/195064/en-ushttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/266668/en-ushttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/277624/en-ushttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/246548/en-ushttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/247515/en-ushttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/240348/en-usHopefully one of these links will help you. If not, please post your computer's specifications so we can try to narrow down the problem.

[quote name='totallydude']thnx mphenterprises, but i think dat some programs such as internet explorer or windows meida player are not in the program utity and pro?Is it possible that you are looking for installed Windows programs? These may not come up in the list with the other programs on the computer is will be in a separate area in Add/Remove Programs under Add/Remove Windows Components, you should see and icon when you have the Add/Remove window open, if you look around in there you will find IE and Media Player, you may have to expand some of the lines listed and use Details so see each one. It is not recommended that you remove Internet Explorer but you can remove Outlook Express and Windows Media Player if you use another program for these things.Northlite

Yeh - if you remove Internet Explorer, you will not be able to log onto the Microsoft website, and your update process probably won't work. I know the manual won't, I'm not sure about the automatic (not recommended) or notify (which I prefer).

i tried the suggestions but i still am not able to fix the missing programs. i think it is a registry problem, but when i looked in hkeylocalmachine_/software/microsoft/currentversion/unistall there is only a limited number of registered programs not all of them are included and most of them are 32 characters long

This may be a long shot but if you have XP, try to do a System Restore back a couple of weeks. There is no way to know when, if at all, the programs disappeared.Ironically, you will have to reinstall programs that you installed since the System Restore date you choose. Again, it is a long shot but maybe a program or application that you installed is causing this problem.....OR....some type of virus or spyware. Have you run any scans?

i have run several scans with Ad-Aware 2007, SUPERAntiSpyware, AntiVir Guarrd, PC Tools Spyware Doctor Starter Kit, and Spybod S&D, finding nothing. I don't think that I ever had a System Restore or know where it is. So, I still think it has to do with the registry problem.

It absolutely has to do with the registy. However, a System Restore will reverse any registry chances. Also, System Restore is reversible. So, if you do it and you see it doesn't work, you can put your system back to the original date. You have done a lot of troubleshooting on your own. At this point, the only viable option I see at this point is to try a System Restore...that is if you have Windows XP.

Okay follow these steps:Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Sytstem Tools -> System RestoreFollow the onscreen instructions and restart your computer. Make sure you choose a date that is significantly far enough away from today to rule out any recent program installations. Once your computer restarts, you will get a message indicating that System Restore was successful. At that time, go to the Add/Remove utility and see if the problem was corrected.

the problem existed before june, but the system restore earliest is on june 15 only. i think it is because i had cleared the system restore button while cleaning up the computer. i'm not sure, but i think that the whole problem is from me using Eusing Free Registry Clean 1.5.

Okay, this definitely seems like a virus or spyware issue. You have said some key words, "slow startup," "missing buttons," and "invalid register icons."I am not sure why your only System Restore option is June 15th. Do you remember downloading and/or installing anything on that date? If so, what was it?You have a good assortment of anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Let's kick it up a notch. Download, Install, and run these two programs:Dr. Web Cure-ItRootkit RevealerThe latter will only show you if you have any rootkits. The link I provided will give you sites that will help you remove any rootkits if you have them in your system.

dr. web's cure-it found no viriuses, so i do not think that the problem is related to either a spyware or virius.
