Ok...I have been trying to set up a proxy server for the past few weeks, but obviously that did not work. I have a Windows XP Pro machine, and i have tried to set it up using Apache, IIS 5.1 and CCProxy, but every time I check connection (typing localhost in the address bar) it says that i am not authorized to access this site.Does anyone have any ideas that may make this work? I am open to even installing linux if i have to.Thanks

Are you trying to set up a proxy server, where a server makes requests on behalf of other machines, or a web server, where one can make web requests like you may have tried in the address bar I guess? Apache and IIS tend to suggest the latter while CCProxy may be the former.I remember years ago using Windows Proxy Server 2.0 on a LAN that used a shared ISDN internet connection.Regards,JB

Basically I want to have a machine at my house that will allow me to access the web via firefox through a proxy from work. Our network has us restricted on what content we are able to view, so we proxy out using free proxy servers we find on the net, but they are unreliable.

Do I have this correct:You want to have your home machine connect to your work's network, which would usually be a VPN type of connection, and from there access the web in Firefox? If so, I guess then my question is what kind of VPN setup does your work have that you would be connecting into and do they have some support staff that could help you with this that may be better than those of us that don't know what the network configuration is on that network?Regards,JB

That's a little more indepth than I think we need. Keep in mind that I don't know what I'm talking about so bear with this scenario. Currently our web access is limited through our company intranet/network. Currently we can bypass this limitation by using firefox with a proxy. Usually somewhere in the middle east or brazil using port 8080.Currently I want to set up an old machine at my home to bounce this proxy off of to access the web. What software/configuration would be most beneficial for the situation?Sorry if this is confusing

I'm still trying to get a little unconfused here so here is another attempt to see if I have what you want correct:You want to set up a home machine to use from work as a proxy to access the web to get around the limitations that the company network has on web connections?Regards,JB

Ok, then here is a checklist you should be aware of in terms of things you'll need:1) There has to be some public IP address to use for the proxy and should be static. Does the internet connection on the home machine have a static IP or does it change every so often? This is just one part but is a reasonable starting point.2) Firewall configurations. Do you have a firewall on the home machine and if so is it prepared to accept requests from the work machine to a specific port? This is important as I don't think you'd want to set up a machine for hackers to load a bunch of nasties on.3) DNS on the home machine. It may be that you'll have to configure the work machine to use the DNS that the home system does or something similar I think as if the work has banned some sites then I think the DNS would likely be where it would start.4) Connecting to home and back out. This is where things get kind of tricky and I'm not sure how to set this up since basically you are going into your home machine and then back out again but I would think the other parts are important pitfalls to avoid. For example you could try to use "Remote Desktop" to connect to the home machine as something to explore.Regards,JB
