Alrighty... I trotted myself to outer San Francisco this morning (very, very morning) to get in line for an iPhone. I arrived, Starbucks in hand, at 6:00 AM. I was sixth in line.I waited all day, passing the time by talking to the people around me, and hanging out with Kim Brinson (PCW Managing Editor) and Harry McCracken (PCW Editor in Chief), who were also waiting in line. I also napped, watched a movie on my iPod, and drank an absolutely insane amount of coffee. The line was sedate, and not too long. (Compared to the downtown SF location, that is.) Last estimate I heard was 150 people. The Apple employees were kind, bringing us water and free Starbucks drinks (twice!). I was in and out of the store quickly with my iPhone -- I'll buy accessories another day when it's not so crazy. About the biggest excitement of the day was seeing Kevin Rose (of digg.com) walk out of the mall past my place in line. I have activated my phone (which was easy since I am already on AT&T) and it is syncing my stuff now. It's hard to sit here and look at it without touching and playing with it!Anyone have any line stories from where you were?

I am curious as to how you like it and how it works. Detail...we want details...espeically since Apple has been loath to give any up until now.

Honestly, I love it. But, I have to agree with everything we said in our article on what Apple did right and wrong. Overall, it's great. But I miss my IM support, and I really wish it recorded video and did voice dialing. I think my biggest annoyance, though, is that when you are in email or text messaging, you can't turn the screen horizontally and get a widescreen keyboard. It only works in Safari. The widescreen keyboard is very comfortable for two thumb typing.

The widescreen keyboard is very comfortable for two thumb typing.Interesting list of things that Apple did wrong. I am suprised that some things did not make it on there. Personally, the things missing that are keeping me from being ready to get an iPhone: 1) lack of third party application support (I would like to be able to add things that I want such as a SlingPLayer, a GPS mapping program, a Office type application, etc...and this could allow for the one item that PCWorld's list had: IM application); 2) lack of a removable/replaceable battery (the idea of putting juice wasting features like music and video playback on a phone SCREAMS for an easy ability to swap in a fresh battery...this has always been a weakness of the iPod in my opinion, but it is liveable...you don't, OTOH, want your battery to go dead on your phone from listening to music or watching movies right when you need the phone to make or receive a call); 3) 2G network (OK, this one does not bother me too much in theory, but I suppose it could bother me more if I had an iPhone and ended up browse a lot or they added a SlingPlayer); 4) locked into AT&T (since they ended up with some decent plans, this one kind almost falls off the list for me...the $60 plan is not that much different then what I have with my Treo 650 with Sprint and likely would be pretty much right on point if I upgraded to a Treo 755p with Sprint); and 5) lack of ability to purchase and download songs or videos right on the iPhone (OK, so what is the point of having a phone radio and WiFi built into the thing if you cannot use it to get music directly on the device instead of having to use a computer...dumb).Thus, I am waiting for version 2.0 or higher. I am waiting to see if they address some of the things. Probably the biggest one that stops me is the lack of third party application support (and Web 2.0 widgets/apps don't count). I can live with the battery issue, especially there will be a ton of third party battery adapters just like for the iPod. The 2G network could be an issue, but will almost certainly be "corrected" in future version...it is just a matter of time. Since the plans are actually not bad, I could live with AT&T, even though they supposedly have poor customer service support. After all, I am with Sprint, which is supposedly worse than AT&T and it does not bother me (other than their idiotic policy of offering highly discounted phones only to new customers and not existing customers...nothing say "please go to another carrier" better than that stupid policy). :DWell, enjoy the new toy.

I'll wait for version 2.0 or 3.0 when they get it right. Never never rush out for the 1st of anything.
