I would like to set up a personal peer to peer file sharing network over the internet with a couple of people. what is the easist way of doing this without letting the rest of the word download stuff off of my computers?

if its just between a few people why don't you just use file transpher utilities or larger file sharing servers like yousendit.com

there are file transfers on messengers depending on the size, you can make a torrent file, of course if its legal. Illegal activities cannot be discussed on this forum. Only your friends will get it if they are the only ones that have the information of the torrent.

I was hoping for something that acted just like a home file sharing network. i share folders and he has access to them. an ftp server is a valid posibility, but I dont' want to have to buy a domain name.

[quote name='halohack']I was hoping for something that acted just like a home file sharing network. i share folders and he has access to them. an ftp server is a valid posibility, but I dont' want to have to buy a domain name. You don't need to have a domain name to use an FTP server per se. All you need is the IP address, which all computers on the Net have. The logisitcal problem comes in that your IP address on the Net is likely one that is dynamically assigned by your ISP. Thus, if you purely have them use your IP address, you then need to check it right before they want to access the FTP server and give it to them by email or phone. If you do a domain name, then you can also pay for a dynamic DNS service. Such services install a small application on your computer that keeps the DNS service aware of your current IP address so that when some tries to access your domain name, it can be found. At least I think that is how it is done.Your other option is one of the remote access options. WinXP Pro has built-in remote access ability that can be accessed from ANY WInXP machine (Home or Pro...although it does require you get a client from the Micro$oft website for Home) for free. So, if you are running WinXP Pro, then this would be a free option. Otherwise, you could look at the various paid for software packages.

I don't know if this is okay with you but there is a program called hamachi that emulates a network and you can treat it like as if it was connected to your router via the internet.
