I would like to transfer my favorites list from my old computer to a new one. I have a Maxtor external hard drive but so far I don't seem to have the savvy to export to it, then of course I would like to import to the new one. Am I fated to do that or is there a way-Shiprock

Hi Shiprocks. Well, the process is slightly different depending on the browser you use:Internet Explorer - - Click on File -> Import and Export...This will open the Import and Export Wizard- Click Next- Select "Export Favorites"- Click Next- Make sure Favorites is highlighted- Click Next- Make sure the radial button next to "Export to a file or address" is selected- Click Browse- Seclect your External Drive- Click Next and then Click FinishFirefox - - Click on Bookmarks -> Manage BookmarksThis will open a secondary window of all your bookmarks- Click File -> Export- Select your External Drive- Click OK

From there, you should be able to follow the on-screen instructions to export them to a file on the external drive. Then, when the drive is attached to the new computer, you do the same command on the new computer but follow the instructions to import from the file that you saved on the external drive.

I normaly just copy over my current Fav file and then drag and drop it over to my external HD then drag and drop onto my new pc of course under the correct folders but the import/export feature is there for you to use. Does this also work for address books under e-mail account??

It is again easier in general to just use the import/export function of the email program...but you can just copy over a file on many email programs...just have to find that file. :D

[quote name='Arther']Does this also work for address books under e-mail account??Yes. If you use an email exchange server such as Outlook, you can import and export email address books and even the entire email account from one computer to another.

[quote name='Arther']So is there a import/export feature with in the e-mail account its self that I would use for that?Do you mean directly through the email account (Gmail, Hotmail, or another paid service) or do you mean through the email server such as Outlook?Within Outlook, you can follow these steps:- Click on File -> Import and Export- Select "Export to a file"- Click Next- On the next screen, select the highest mail level. That might say "Personal Folder or Mailbox) This will include everything within your Outlook account, Mail, Addresses, Calendar, everything- Click Next- Click Browse to select the Export location- Click NextYou may have the option to encrypt the .pst file- Click Finish and Outlook will export the email account> {quote:title=Arther wrote:}{quote}And would it still work correctly if I am going from Outlook Express on one pc to the full version of Outlook on the new one? When I backup my Outlook accounts, I transfer them to a flash drive as a .pst file (Personal Storage Folder). Outlook Express does not have that option. You can export messages and the address book as a text file; however, I do not think that will be a good format to import into Outlook.

Yes, thanks to all, that did it. My heads in the clouds as this Windows XP has gone black screen on me 3 times in the last 2 months with a 'corrupted Win 32 file' and since Janurary countless problems. I'm on P.C. Recovery right now, the HD is whining. I keep the vents vacumned and use AVG anti virus and the spyware, Reg-cure, Hi-jack this and regular error checking and defrag. Now I'll put up with Vista :-))-Thanks all

:-) If you have any other questions, please ask.I do have a question for you. Have you determined the cause of your error messages? Was it just a corrupted XP Operating System?

Okay, just so that I have all the facts straight, have you given up on fixing the XP PC and that is why you are transferring things? The reason I am a bit confused is that this post "...as this Windows XP has gone black screen on me 3 times in the last 2 months with a 'corrupted Win 32 file' and since Janurary countless problems. I'm on P.C. Recovery right now, the HD is whining. I keep the vents vacumned and use AVG anti virus and the spyware, Reg-cure, Hi-jack this and regular error checking and defrag..." seems rather ambiguous. If you would like to get some help with that specific problem, please let us know.

Hey MHP, thanks for asking, I will keep the desktop working, albeit offline, but will use it. My printer and scanner might or might not work with Vista, although everything is HP, and I get great photos off the printer. So far it has recovered, but, been there, anything I can do when it refuses on reboot to come alive and shows a black screen with the windows corrupt message?? Shiprock

Hi Shiprock. Well, in all actuality, a complete reinstall would be the cleanest fix. You could do a repair. However, since you are transferring files and data over the the Vista computer, you might as well start fresh with a new XP in the original computer. This way, you can have some fun with both computers...network is the first thing that comes to mind.

Shiprock - you may have better luck getting the printer to work under Vista than the scanner. Scanners are more finicky about their connections and software.Information can be found on the HP website. Click on the drivers and downloads button on the lower left side of the opening screen. If you have trouble connecting the scanner under Vista, you might want to consider mphenterprises suggestion of a home network. There are several advantages - a wireless routher and a few ethernet cables would be less expensive than a new scanner. Putting a router between your computer and the internet puts a hardware firewall between your computer and the internet and it is more effective than a software firewall. It makes it very easy to move files between computers. My 5 year old HP scanner will not be supported under Vista, but as long as I still have at least one XP computer on the network I don't need to buy a new scanner. I don't use one all that often.

Would any of you suggest a new harddrive and a new XP CD. When I bought this HP from Bestbuy I didn't get a CD with it so I have been using the P.C. Recovery in the partition of the C-drive. The last time I did a clean was with a Windows '98, with a 3G (that's right) HD. Any ideas on a clean sweep as my drive is giving off various sounds like a whine, MPH or Big Fan? Or of course anyone else who would like to ring in-Shiprock

I'll defer the XP CD question to RGreen. He is our resident Operating System expert within this forum.
