I have tried to convert an Xvid AVI file to another type (MPEG, WAV, etc.) and each time, the converter program (I've tried 6 different converter programs) is automatically shut down and a Windows error pop-up appears ([program name] has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.). The AVI file opens & plays without problem with Windows Media Player. But, I want to convert this file into a format that can be burned onto a DVD. Any ideas?Michael

The main culprit is Ulead DVD Movie Factory 3SE, which I have used to record AVI & MPEG videos onto DVDs with no troubles. Thinking it was the particular AVI file, I downloaded several "trial" versions of converters: figuring if one of them worked, I would pay for the download. Most provide near full version for trial period or add logo/watermark, which is fine for testing. The first two (4U AVI MPEG Converter & WinAVI Video Converter) closed, like my copy of the Ulead DVD program, when trying to convert to other file types (other AVI, MPEG, WMV, etc.). Three or four others produced only audio files, without video. Those I already removed from the computer. So, I don't have names, sorry. As to the DRM , I guess it's possible. This file is from an IT friend who made a copy of an episode of a TV series I missed. How he obtained it, I don't know, but I would be surprised if it has DRM (knowing him). Thanks again for suggestions!

Well, I was thinking about it and I am not sure if DRM crosses over into .avi files. I may be dead wrong but that is my theory. That being said, since every single one of the programs that you used gave you the same error message. I do not thnk it has anything to do with the program itself.Do you have all the latest video controller drivers for your video card? I am just grasping at straws here but maybe that might help.
