I've been looking at this mobo/cpu combo- http://www.tigerdire...4136&CatId=1599 and this video card- http://www.tigerdire...312&CatId=1826I can use my ddr memory, I'm thinking the 800 FSB and the PCI-E video ought to to be a big upgrade since most of my problems occur during video related operations. This gives me a new cpu as well. I'm just getting tired of trying to repair this setup and not getting to use it.

SOOTHSAYER .......Check these out!http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103037http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186037http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835200014http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150229This would be a FAR SUPERIOR set up for only slightly more money, although you may need a much larger power supply than your current one, at least a 450 watt with 28 amps

THANKS SPIKE! I never tried anything other than Intel. I'll check it out, but if I were to cheap out a little, how big a difference is the video card for HDTV not gaming.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150229orhttp://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195312&CatId=1826:)and by the way I have an Antec 430W power supply?

Soothsayer - the photos of the 8400GS show the output cable with the three component connections for the component cable to HDTV. The 8600 does not. It has only the S-Video cable which while meeting the minimum to be considered HDTV is not really. It is DVD quality, but I don't believe support more than 720p.Having looked at various video cards with an on replacing my 7300LE card, I have noticed different manufacturers offer various converter dongles for the same basic chip. If HDTV is a concern, I would explore various 8400/8600 cards on Newegg, with an eye on checking the photos they provide as to the additonal contents included in the box.

My TV is a little older HDTV, it has vga or component inputs for HDTV. I'll upgrade in a year. My original concern about HDTV was more about the processing power rather than the connectivity.

There are 2 major differences in the video cards,Stay away fromr ANY NVidia card that ends in GS, or has anything to do with turbo cache memory. The power supply you have would be fine for now.
Spike - for my own edification since I am also looking at video cards. Why no GS series?Same thing thats wrong with a celeron cpu, its a full featured chip that has been ruined by turning off features, and speed, and they will typically use slower ram and and older form factor, for the ram, ie. ddr2 instead of ddr3, thus seriously "dumbing down" the end users experience. You think you're buying the thing as a GT, but it ends up being slower than the previous generation of chips ie, you buy a 7600GS, and it is slower than a 6800GT.

Thanks for the video card info!!! How important is Dual Core technology vs. P4 HT 3.2 for video editing and audio. I see the general consensus is to do a GOOD video card but don't worry about dual core-http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2945305&CatId=2019-or would this combo work as well?I guess what I'm asking SPIKE is this combo you recommended something you've done or are you offering helpful suggestions in my price range? THANKS

Hi Soothsayer, et al.I created a new thread for you so that your questions about motherboards, etc. can be seen by more people. The other discussion in relation to your current system is still open; however, I think that situation is pretty much "resolved."You have received some exactly advice so far. Good luck with your new build.

I'm using the vga HD input on my 60" Marantz 6-7 yr. old HDTV and waiting a year for the new HDMI 1.3 BlueRay or HDDVD technologies to unfold before replacing it. The 1.3 interface carries twice the data of current HDMI's and will allow the new lossless audio formats to arrive. So since I'm going to change out this card shortly thats the reason I've been asking questions about cheaper cards. I bought my current setup 3 yrs. ago and haven't been able to record HDTV until just recently. I even had ATI swap out my ATI HDTV tuner card, thinking it was the problem. I'm not a gamer at all, just music, movies and HDTV. Just looking for something solid that can handle that.

Not really, that is an early PCI-E board and is only at the 8X factor (slower ) instead of the faster and newer 16XI'm asking SPIKE is this combo you recommended something you've done or are you offering helpful suggestions in my price range? THANKSYesThat CPU is fine and dual core is a massive improvment, and will be even better for the future as more programs take advantage of multithreading

Will a dual core work in your recommendation and if not, what would you recommend as a low cost dual core mobo/cpu combo.

System 1 AM2 Dual corehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103774http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131024http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820134384 2Xhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130086System 2 Socket 939http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131125http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103053http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835200014http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130086 {size:18px} OR......http://www.newegg.co...E16814130017The 2 systems here, I only spent about 15 min., looking this up, are 1 AMD , am2 , and a 939 AMD. The 939 would reuse your HD and RAM, PS, case, fans, etc, .....really only replacing the MB , CPU, and, Video CardThe AM2, would need to also replace your RAM, as the newer form factors, for both AMD and Intel, no longer use DDR, they have both moved to DDR2 or DDR3 I put a DX10 capable card in there just to give you a choice, and if you intend on using Vista soon, the DX10 card, the 8600, would be the better choice. These are nowhere near top of the line gaming rigs, but would perform nicely, and should be able to keep up with future needs for a couple of years

Hi Spike Any recommendations on a good power supply and quiet case. I'm thinking if I go with the AM2 setup I will need a better power supply. My present case is an Antec Sonata with the power supply upgrade to Antec 430W.:D
