For some reason my anti-virus program failed to protect my e-machine computer, and it became infected. I tried several different remove programs, none worked. As a last resort, I ran the system recovery disk, and totally started over. This seemed to fix my problem. However, now I have new troubles I can only access very limited web sites. I cant get on apples web site for example or many others. Its not a provider issue, my neighbor can go any where he wants, and my provider ran a system check, everything is working properly on their end. The web sites I am trying to get on are not experiencing problems, like I said, my neighbor can access them. I think it is a security and / or encryption issue Ive tried adjusting these in my browsers properties, still doesnt work. Ive even tried a new browser (Was using Internet Explorer, changed to Mozilla) still can not access most sites. I can get on yahoo, but can not use any of its links I am running Avast as my new anti-virus program now. (was using CA eTrust when I got the virus) Its not blocking the sites. VERY, VERY frustrated at this point. Any suggestions????

While it likely won't matter...DSL or cable modem or other?Using a router? Or directly connected to the modem?Running a firewall on the computer?

cable modem, directly connected... no router. was planning on using one for a laptop, but don't want to hook it up until I resolve this problem first. As far as firewalls, I guess it is what ever came with windows xp

[quote name='Kenneth828']cable modem, directly connected... no router. was planning on using one for a laptop, but don't want to hook it up until I resolve this problem first. As far as firewalls, I guess it is what ever came with windows xpIf you did not turn on the XP firewall, I don't believe it is on. I believe Micro$oft leaves it off by default...but that could have changed with XP SP2...seem to remember something along that line...but...the...memory...is...hazy. :wink:OK, brain cramp resolved for now.You can check the firewall by right-clicking on My Network Places and selecting Properties from the pop-up menu. In the resulting window, right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties from the pop-up menu. Go to the Advanced tab. You should see a Settings... button for the Windoze firewall. Regardless of your problem here, you DEFINITELY want to run a firewall of some sort...at least the basic Windoze one...but I would recommend something like ZoneAlarm (free version available...everyone likes free, right :D ).As to your problem, have you check your driver for the NIC (network) card? If you go to Device Manager and look for the NIC card, see if there is a yellow question mark or some other message. That is the best that I can think of at the moment.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like you might have to go,Tools, Internet Options, Content, and redo your parental, or Content Advisor which reverts to you seeing a black little circle with a line through it when you go to your favorites, I had this before and you'll need your password to get in. But I only think that's it because of the recovery you did, and I have done also. Re: my first three words-Shiprock520

[quote name='Kenneth828']For some reason my anti-virus program failed to protect my e-machine computer, and it became infected. No program can guarantee 100% coverage. That is why it is always best to use a layered approach when it comes to security. Smax is correct, ANY firewall is better than the Windows default firewall. Zone Alarm Free is very good.If you only have one Anti-virus application, you are EXTREMELY under-protected and it will not be a question of if you will become victim to another virus, it's when will it happen.
