Have two dvd burners (just installed one that is dual-layer with lightscribe). Both are recognized in Windows XP and both work (can play dvds and cds in either). Here's the problem...I can not burn to either burner. I have tried Sonic's RecordNow (which came on my HP Pavilion a445c) and nero's 6 (which came with the new burner). No matter what I try to do (burn all the audio files I have on my PC onto a DVD for backup - and to alleviate some memory on my PC; burn photo files so as to create a back-up file). Ultimately I want to convert some home vhs-c movies to DVD's but I hesitate to even start that project until I can get my "burner" issues resolved.Any ideas? I've checked the websites for both - drivers are current.

Hi ksmcd4. Just to confirm, Optical Drives (CD or DVD drives) do not have drivers, they have firmware. Did you verify that the firmware for both drives are current? Also, try this as a troubleshooting option:- Disconnect the new DVD burner and try to burn anything. If the process runs completely switch the drives and try to do a complete burn again. Now, when I say a complete burn, I mean as you normally did before the installation of the new drive. If, for whatever reason, you are not able to complete a burn with either or both of the drives, please post the exact error message that you get.

Yes, firmware on both are current.Example: Using WMP 10, I tried to copy the music from my hard drive onto a CD. Tried using both burners. Got the same message - Please insert a blank disc. I've inserted so many discs (so many types) and nothing is recognized.Using the other burning software (RecordNow or Nero) I get either a message to insert a blank disc; or that the recording was done - however, the disc is still blank; or that the information couldn't be verified so the disc is worthless.I know this is a software conflict somewhere. I was hoping that getting the new burner would "take care of" this problem. At this point I simply want to offload (music, photo and some data files) to "clean out" my hard drive so I'll have plenty of room to begin my video transfers.Any other ideas?

Sounds like a root kit/DRM problemMPH, could you post the link for root kit detector?

I believe that I remember reading somewhere that having multiple burning programs on a computer can lead to conflicts. If so, then having the programs that came with both drives on the computer might be the problem.Of course, the secondary problem is that in my experience, the burning programs that come with the burner is typically a "crippled" version that will only work with the burner that it came with. You must "upgrade" to a full version for it to work with other burners. I know this was the case with my old CD burner and DVD burner that I had on my old Dell (since retired) desktop. The CD burner came with Nero, but would not recognize the DVD burner when I installed it. I had to upgrade Nero to the full version and it then would recognize the DVD burner.I believe it was the instructions of those drives that warned about multiple burning programs.I don't know if any of this is true anymore or not.My suggestion would be to remove one of the burning programs and see if the other program will work with the drive that it came with. You can also check to see if the Windoze built-in ability to burn will work with one program gone. If that does not work, try removing the second program as well and see if the default Windoze ability will at least work.

Hi everyone.Smax, you can have as many burning programs as your heart desires....you just cannot run them at the same time. I currently have four different burning applications; however, I primarily use Nero 7.Spike, with pleasure....this is to get the Rootkit Revealer...this is a forum that specializes in Rootkit Removal

What is this root kit/DRM problem you're referring to?

Ksmcd4, I will leave that one for Spike to explain. In the meantime, you have several troubleshooting options to perform:- I would first follow Smax's suggestion regarding the burning applications. As I mentioned, you can have as many burning applications as you would like. However, as Smax pointed out, it is best to have the FULL version of any burning application and not the trial version or the version that came with the drive- Next, I would do my suggestion I posted initially. If neither of those work, then I would start advise you start scanning for malicious applications. Again, Spike will explain that in detail.

I believe that the memory resident CD-RW/DVD+/-RW programs that are used to format and read and write RW disks much like floppy disks can conflict. This is what Roxio refers to as DLA (http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/dla/overview.html_), I believe. I believe that part can conflict.I believe you are correct about the basic burn program that is NOT memory resident.

Well, if there is a conflict, I have not seen one in 7+ years. I have even set up some of my clients with multiple burning applications but I always advised them to only use one at a time. For example, I have Winamp, Nero, Jet Audio, and my Zune player...all of them have burning functionality. However, I do not run more than one at a time.I actually tried it once, just to see what would happen, and my computer hung to the point that I had to restart the computer.

I think we are basically at the same point. For Nero, the "Burning ROM" program (if that is what they still call it...haven't upgraded from version 6 and version 6 is on my somewhat retired computer) is not a memory resident program. But, InCD (I believe that is the correct one...does the same function as Roxio's DLA if I recall correctly) is a memory resident program that must be running all the time in order to use a RW disk formatted with it. If you run Roxio's full set including DLA and Nero's full set including InCD, I believe they might conflict (it is basically like running both programs at the same time).Anyways...moot point...I think we are at the same place...just took different paths to get there.

Using Nero Express Essentials 6 here's what happens:Trying to create an audio CD - in my new HP dvd1040i burner.I add the tracks to the player and for each of the tracks I get the following message:"One or more files could not be added to a compilation. It may be possible that the files can be added, if a dedicated plug-in is installed".Using Sonics RecordNow version 6.5.1 on this same burner: I get a "successful burn" according to the software but when I go to access the music no program (WMP, RealPlayer nor Nero ShowTime Essentials) is able to open it.I was able to burn some tracks using the RecordNow in my old cd burner and access them with WMP HOWEVER I lose all the album and artist info.Any more thoughts?

- What type of files are you trying to burn? What extensions?- Do you have access to different manufactured CDs? For example, if you are using Staples brand, do you have access to another brand, let's say Memorex?- Have you tried this with both DVDs and CDs?

I've tried off-brand and name brand (Maxell, Memorex) CD's and DVDs and all formats: - CD-R, CD_RW, DVDR, DVDRW.Right now I'm just trying to get my music files off my hard drive to free up space. I've also tried to do the same with photos - stilll no luck.Do I just need to get a full version of a CD/DVD burning software? If so, any suggestions as to which one?

Also, and I'm not sure this helps clarify anything but in some programs that I've tried to back-up apparently the info. goes to a temporary windows file and I get an icon on my task bar that I have info. ready to burn to a CD. I try to burn the info. but consistently get a message that there's no disk in the burner (even though I've tried many new ones and all types). This is a big reason why I got the new burner (and the fact that I wanted dual layer and lightscribe should I ever get a chance to get our home movies onto a DVD).

Well, before you start paying for full software, you still have more troubleshooting to do. You have tried different applications, different media, and different manufactured CDs and DVDs. Now, as I mentioned earlier:- Disconnect the new DVD burner and try to burn anything. If the process runs completely switch the drives and try to do a complete burn again. If you are able to do a full burn with both each drive removed, you know there is a conflict with the drive.ADDITIONAL INFOI am not too keen on Lightscribe, just my personal opinion. Try this second level suggestion and see what happens.

When you put in a store bought audio CD, it does NOT contain album or artist information...it does contain some sort of identifying information that an online database (CDDB database) to retreive the artist and album information. So, unless you EXACTLY dublicate an album, that look up feature will not work I don't think. If you want to retain album and artist information, then you have to burn a MP3 audio disk, but then your CD player needs to support the playing of MP3 disks.
- Disconnect the new DVD burner and try to burn anything. If the process runs completely switch the drives and try to do a complete burn again.
Done. Still same problems...can't get any DVD to burn and with CD's I get lots of error messages. And thanks to SMAX for the info. on burning audio files. Late last night I discovered that burning the audio files as a data CD would let me retain the artist/album etc info. What I did find when I switched out the burners was that the old burner was set to "Select cable" setting and on the master ribbon - if this made any difference.I've since moved that burner to the slave ribbon (and put the setting to Slave). My new burner is set to Master and on the master ribbon.Unfortunately I still have the same problems.Neither will burn a DVD (be it DVDR or DVDRW). Using the NERO program and trying to burn my photo file as a data file onto a DVD +RW disc the verification fails. The error messages is about "Read errors" and the report is 11 pages long.Like I said earlier, I can't seem to use Window's drag & drop to burn anything on either burner and I can't use either burner with the RecordNow or Nero programs either. Both burners do play regular (movie) DVD's just fine and audio CD's just fine. Also, after switching the new burner (HP dvd1040i) to the Master slot it now makes A LOT of noise when it starts to run; it was extremely quiet before.[quote:6d3a80c131][/quote:6d3a80c131]
