I just bought my laptop for college and of course all of my music is on my home computer's library. I do have an ipod with most of my library on it. What is the best way to transfer my music? The Apple store told me that I have to burn it all to DVDs and rip them on my new computer, but a forgetful friend of mine apparentlly just pluged her ipod into her laptop and the music transfered. Is this possible?thanks for the help.

Is this possible?> > thanks for the help.As pointed out, there are ultilities that will allow the retreival of music from your iPod.In theory, however, you should be able to mount it WITHOUT syncing it to the computer by holding down the Control and Alt keys while connecting it to the Windoze computer. Once iTunes shows up and mounts the iPod, then you should be able to make the iPod operate in "disk mode" (i.e. mount it as a hard drive). Then you can turn off the hidden folders on the drive. There is also now a "Transfer Purchases from iPod" in iTunes. This will apparently allow you to copy iTunes Store purchased songs from your iPod to a new computer. I don't believe it will work for music ripped from CDs to iTunes and synced to your iPod...only for songs/videos purchased through the iTunes Store.

I was able to open my ipod as a hard drive, and I have found the hidden folder which contains my entire library. But when I dragged it over my itunes library, it showed that it was able to be put into my itunes, but when I did it, nothing happened. Any ideas?

Ok so all you have to do is plug in your ipod, let it load, then click The Start button at the bottom left of windows. In Vista just click on your username and it opens all of your files, click all folders, click "computer" (my computer) then double click on your ipod. Then find the orgainize button in the window, click it then there is a way to view hidden folders just look for it. A folder called Ipod_control should come up. You can then open that folder, and drag and drop the music folder from that one, and put it into your my music folder on your computer. The transfer can take some time, but when it's done you just have to open all the little folders, highlight all the songs, and drag and drop them into iTunes, and there you go. The bigger the iPod the longer it takes:( but when it's done, you have all your songs :)

Yes, after you copy the songs to the hard drive of your computer, you still have to somehow "tell" iTunes that they are there. Just putting them on the computer's hard drive will not let iTunes know that they are there or where they are. The typical way would be to open up iTunes and use the "Add to Library..." command. It would appear that you can also drags the songs from a Windoze Explorer window to the open iTunes window.
