Hi everyone, i experienced a very odd problem. Just today i was reformatting my ipod using itunes (obviously), and i wanted to clean up my itunes list. So i highlighted all the songs on the list and it gave me the choice to keep or delete. Well, when they said keep i thought they meant keep it on the list or delete it from the list. Turns out delete meant to the recycle bin and keep deletes it from the list. So i chose Delete. And as it should have it went to the recycle bin. I checked it and it had all the songs i checked off. But, thats not what i wanted so i clicked Restore All Items. Just to check if the songs were restored i went to my music folder and only a couple files were still there but EVERYTHING was deleted. Well, not everything, but almost everything. Oddly enough only about an estimated (rounded) 100 songs weren't deleted but the other 3000 were. And i dont understand why. So i ran a scan to see if i could recover the files that i deleted, but it didn't find any of the songs that were "deleted" meaning they must not have been deleted or something. Whats the issue?

Hi Derekoleynik. Just a couple of points. The title of this thread was vague and more than likely would have been overlooked. I reworded it so that it would get more visibility.Secondly, this is not a Windows issue; therefore, it should not be in the Windows forum. If anything, this is an iPod issue. Since there is no iPod forum, I moved this thread to the "Music & Video" forum. Now, personally, I do not have an iPod so I am not in a position to assist you but there are many other members who are more than happy to help you.

Maybe you didn't highlight all of them and just left out 300 so those didn't get deleted. Did you download those songs off itunes or were they from another source?

ok i just deleted one song from my itunes and it didn't go straight to recycle bin. I searched for it but nothing came up either lol. So i think you can't get them back. Did you by any chance have a backup like saved it on a cd disk?

But i also said that i downloaded a program from this site to recover deleted items in the recycle bin because the files aren't 100% deleted from the bin but the right program can get it back, im doing that and its only detecting some of the songs i deleted.

Okay, a couple of things:- Lilxkid didn't ask if you received a backup file. He asked you if you made your own backup of your music. I gather you did not. If that is correct, and all assumptions point to this, you may be out of luck.- Now, regarding recovery software. You may be able to recover the files since you caught them quickly enough. As you may or may not know, files are not truly deleted until another file is saved in the same sector that the deleted file was stored. However, these recovery programs are not 100% guaranteed. There are so many applications out there that you may have to run several different applications to potentially recover everything, and again, unfortunately, there is no guarantee you will recover everything. If and when you get your music back, the best suggestion that anyone can give you...Backup, Backup, Backup.

I personally get lazy to backup lol but I've learned my lesson the hard way by losing my 90 songs on itunes, then 30 songs lol. :D

Well, there are four main options:- Another internal partition/hard drive that is not associated to where the main collection is located- An external hard drive- CD/DVD- OnlineThere is a fifth option, I cannot think of it right now. However, if you utilize at least two of these options, you should have no problems. For example, I have 30GBs of music in my primary collection, 70GBs in my secondary collection. I utilize all four options listed:- I have a backup of all 100GBs of music stored on a separate internal partition- I have all of the music within one of my external drives- I have all 100GBs of music backup onto 25 DVDs- I have an online account that gives me unlimited storage space for a nominal monthly fee. I store everything there as well. The more backups you have, the better off you will be if something like this happens again.

You mentioned that you were reformatting your iPod. Have you done that? If you did, did you re-sync it prior to screwing up the songs in iTunes/on the computer? In other words, do you have the songs on your iPod?If there are on the iPod, then you can get them back to the computer. If you reformatted the iPod and had not gotten them back on the iPod, then this path will not work either. You could also try this program. A friend used it when he had some problems. It has a demo that you can down load and will in theory at least see what files it says it can recover...you then would have to buy the program to recover the files.

Not too terribly prevalent in the consumer world, but used rather significantly in the IT world still...I believe.
