Ah yes. Now I get you. Yep, on my list of things to look into/resolve. I agree, it's incredibly useful to know at a glace what you've read and what you haven't.

I got back into the new forums late, and see most of my questions have already been asked, but I still have two.

Avatars - surely the selection can be expanded beyond the few "bubbly" ones and the symbols. I can see why they would be limited, but there were some very imaginative and beautiful ones, but also some that needed a lot of forgiveness.

I have not found the url start and stop buttons, so I guess we have to put them in by hand now. Not a problem as long as I can remember how.

When I first start looking at it, my reaction was similar to the initial reaction some had to Vista, but then it started to grow a bit. Like anything else, we will come to understand it and soon all will be old hands.

Hey rgreen4 --

I agree that the avatar selection is limited. I'm up for suggestions for new ones, if you have any. We just have to be careful that they don't violate any copyrights, etc. It is our intention to let you upload your own as you used to, but the upload tool is currently broken. It's high on our list of things to get fixed.

The URL stop and start buttons are gone, but it's acually a little easier in this system. Just type your text (what you want to show) and then, in the rich text panel, click the "link" button (looks like a link of chain) to the left of the image button in the top row of buttons. You can then enter a web URL or you can search the community for a blog post, forum thread or wiki document. That's how I put the links in the first post of this thread.

As Kellie aluded to, if you click the little chain icon above the place where you type your message, it will bring up new window where one of the choices is to insert a web page link. It allows you to type or paste in the link and a "name" for the link. It then inserts the proper "coding" to have link be in the message.

What you didn't want your Avatar to be an electric guitar?!? ;-)

What about linking to an offsite avatar?

Will that option be available in the near future?

I believe from what Kellie said they intend to offer that ability in the near future...just have to work some of the "kinks" out of the system.

Linking to an offsite avatar is not supported by the system. It's an upload only. That might be something we can request from Jive for a future release. I'll add it to my list.

In the meantime, it will be upload only. When we get the upload working.

I'm looking for a couple of threads from the General Talk forum on the old system, one is the "Where everyone is from" started my mphenterprises and the other is the one about everyones age started I think by lilxkid24. Have they be relocated to another community?

No, everything should have moved to its equivalent home. I intentionally kept the community structure of this forum the same as the last one to make everything easy.

But I am not finding it either. I'll ask about looking back in the old database to make sure stuff transferred. However, you might want to start new threads for those -- that's probably the easiest thing to do.

Sorry smax, but they are different things. One is uploading your image to our servers for us to host (that's what we're working on fixing) and the other is putting the image somewhere like photobucket, taking the URL, and dropping it in our system. So we just look at the image on photobucket's hosting servers. (That's what is currently not supported.)

Hey, we're all here to learn, right? :)

They should be working (I have them enabled) but I can't seem to find them anywhere. I have a bug ticket in on that.

Hi Kellie. In lew of having the old "Post since last logon" link, would it be possible to set up the main Community page so that a few words of the last message is visible without having to open the discussion? This way, we can see which discussions we already viewed.

I submitted a request to have the bold/not bold convention carried over to the main page. I think if we tried to put the first few lines of the post there, it would make the main page too crowded. I'd rather have more posts/blogs/wikis displayed there than portions of posts.

I checked, and you had two thread-level email notifications set. I deleted them. If you have all your email notifications turned off in your preferences, and you don't add any more watches, then you shouldn't get any more email notifications. If you continue to get them, please forward me one to forums@pcworld.com

Thanks!

I found the discussion thread by lilxkid24 on average ages, even though the last response was only a few days ago, it was on page 3, behind some whose last response was weeks and months ago. How does the new board sort the discussions?
