LOL I thought I was in Burger King.... LOL "Have It Your Way." :-) LOL
Nope...it is more like your parent's dinner table when you were a kid...you get it "their way" and you will like it, darn it...and you will sit at the table until you finish it! :^0
Now in my case, I was MUCH more stubborn than my parents were, so I usually ended up winning those battles of will! Long live picky eaters! B-)

Hey, what happened?
Someone obviously decided the PC World pages needed a spring clean - I've a desktop shortcut icon to the PC World pages of interest (which obviously no longer works) and had been unable to connect for a while - now I know why...
Not too sure why it was felt the change was necessary and not too sure what the advantages are - but I'm a newbie so maybe I don't appreciate the finer things - I'm sure in time I'll get used to the changed format - meanwhile I'll try not to be too negative - someone out there has put in a lot of work so obviously 'thanks' are in order...
Good luck

Hi John. If you haven't already, here is how you can refresh your shortcut:
- The main page of this new forum is http://forums.pcworld.com/index.jspa. Copy this url.
- Right Click on the Desktop shortcut you created and click Properties
- You should see a separate window and the "Web Document" tab should be to the forefront
- In the URL section, paste the new forum main page url
- Click OK
This will direct the shortcut to the new forum main page. We are all getting used to the new forum so please ask any questions you would like. :-) Welcome.

Thanks for that mphenterprises - I was going to delete and create a new shortcut but used your suggestion instead...
One thing I do notice I get which I don't 'think' happened with the old pages - I get an exclamation mark bottom left of the browser window with the words 'Done, but with errors on page'. When I click on it it tells me there are problems with this page which 'might prevent it from being displayed properly or functioning properly'...
I'm using IE7 at the moment though I normally use Firefox (still haven't figured out how to create desk top shortcuts with Firefox)
Take care and have a nice weekend - what's left of it,
Johnl

Hi John. Many of us have noticed that. I think the technicians of PCWorld are working on that situation. It appears as though the site works better within Firefox than Internet Explorer.
You can create a shortcut for Firefox the same way you create a shortcut for Internet Explorer. The difference is that you may currently have Internet Explorer set as your main browser. To make Firefox your default browser:
- Tools -> Options
- Click on the "Main" tab
- In the System Default section, make sure that their is a check in the box next to, "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup"
Once you do this, you will see that all the internet shortcuts you have on your Desktop will now have the Firefox icon instead of the Internet Explorer icon. Now, if you primarily use Firefox more than Internet Explorer, this may be a good option for you. However, if you have sites that require Internet Explorer, you can get the Internet Explorer Add-Ons from Mozilla.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply with the information relating to Firefox shortcuts.
I don't 'think' your advice helps me actually create shortcuts whilst browsing with Firefox - it does ensure though that Firefox opens when I click on desk top shortcuts though they may have been created using IE...
I was referring earlier to actually creating shortcuts when using Firefox. In my ignorance what i've been doing is when I need to create a chortcut is cutting and pasting the url to IE then right clicking and selecting 'create shortcut'
Or am I missing something in your post - highly liking I might add !!!
Incidentally something else that might be of interest relating to the new PC World site - and the problem could well be at my end...
After completing a posting and clicking on 'post message' I get:-
'Your message was posted succesfully, but there will be a short delay before it is viewable in the thread'
The screen then refreshes every 10 seconds or so and I suspect will do so until I navigate away from the page.
Is this a documented bug or is it my system I wonder,
Regards,
Johnl

:-) No, you are not missing my point. :-) I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, Firefox does not have a feature similar that of Internet Explorer. At best, you have the ability to Right Click within the site and click "Bookmark This Page." But that is not what you want to do.
What you have been doing is fine. However, there is a way to do what you have been doing without opening Internet Explorer. The steps may seem cumbersome but if you create a lot of Desktop Internet shortcuts, it will be very easy:
- In Firefox, copy the url of the site you would like to create as a Desktop Internet Shortcut
- Go to your Desktop. Right Click anywhere within the Desktop and select "New" and then "Shortcut"
- When the window comes up, paste the url into the field that says, "Type the location of the item:"
- Click Next
- In the next field, type whatever name you would like to label the shortcut (For example: PCWorld Forum)
- Click Finish
This will put an Internet shortcut on your Desktop and, if you set Firefox as your default, will show the Firefox icon.
In relation to your other situation. I think that is related to Internet Explorer only. I tested it in both IE 6 & 7 and got the same situation you noted. I believe Kellie and the PCWorld technicians are aware of it but feel assured, you are not alone. :-)

mphenterprises - thanks for your quick mail. Would have acknowledged it earlier but couldn't find the reply tab - then realised you had to be logged in before the reply tab shows - makes sense !!!
I tried your suggested way of creating shortcuts in Firefox and it works nicely - thanks.
Must spend a couple of hours reading up on how the new pages 'work' - hopefully tomorrow, meanwhile really MUST switch this PC off and catch up on my guitar lessons !!
Take care,
Johnl
