Will it work with Windows XP and internet explorer?

Gripper, I do not use Thunderbird; however, I believe it is a stand-alone application. You do not need Internet Explorer to run it. Here are the system requirements. As long as you have just about the bare minimum in hardware specifications, you should have no problem running Thunderbird.

I run Windows XP Pro and it works just fine for me.
