When a situation arrives that we are in need of a moderator the general process is that the admin and current moderators discuss if it is nesseary how many are needed and then come up with a list and everyone talks back and fourth until everyone comes to a general conclusion. We have had gone through a few moderators on this forum. Did you know they are all represented in the cartoon in my interview with our old Community Manager Kellie Parker?*
Krissy is the only admin not in the image. This was before she came to PC World.

People sometimes put their names in the hats, but there is not really any applying. Generally in the past the way we have done it is that everyone discuss's all aspects etc. Moderating is ok, it is more of a duty to be handled objectivly then it is fun. I ran a few message boards before, long ago as well PCW was in a phpbb format which was all my forums. Anyway, it can be very difficult sometimes when people want to flame each other or there a spammers trying every trick in the book. It can be very difficult sometimes, but it is a job that needs to be done. I think I'm suppose to end this with a question right?

I'm sorry, Aurora. I thought that MPH was the Senior Mod. And yeah, last year I asked if I could be a Mod and was turned down because I didn't have enough computer experience... (though not in so many words...) I was just told that Kellie was the one who made those decisions whenever it was needed.
And I agree, it looks like fun, but it really is a lot of work. Do you know that I'm really proud of you being a woman Mod?

When I started, Aurora and Cosmo were moderators. Aurora knows the ins and outs of who has been a mod, but while it is interesting, it is a responsibility and also limiting. You can't be as free in expressing yourself in some cases lest it reflect back. Though for someone who is normally fairly diplomatic that is not a great restriction.
The worst part is having to read through posts on a topic you have no real interest or expertise in. You review for compliance with the rules, not the subject. Sometimes you also can get caught up in a topic in which you do have an interest. It does take a lot more time than I initially thought it would.

Why don't you read about it on Wikipedia?
