Hi everyone, am in need of some help from the community again. ?:|

I recently did a reformat and reinstall for my laptop, and also downloaded the display driver. But I can't seem to play my DVDs. Whenever I put a DVD in, a window pop-up will appear: "Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings. To view the DVD Troubleshooter, click More Information."

I've tried lowering both (screen resolution & color quality settings) but the problem still persists. I've no problems watching VCDs though.

Would greatly appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

Hi Chyorain. I have some questions for you:

- What version of Windows Media Player are you trying to use?

- Have you tried to watch a DVD within any other player?

- Have you tried to watch the DVD on a regular DVD Player to make sure the disc is not corrupted or damaged?

- Are you trying to watch Wide Screen DVD movies or Full Screen?

LOL Hi Techie. You are on the right path, I believe. You shouldn't have removed your post.

Chyorain, Techie brought up a good point. Windows Media Player is, in my opinion as well, not a very good player. However, if you choose to use it, make sure you have the latest Codecs installed on your computer. Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack. Also, please answer the questions I posed to you in my first posting.

Now, if you are not partial to Windows Media Player and only use it because you don't have anything else, there is a player that will play just about anything you give to it. Download VLC Player

I whole heartedly agree. The only way I have found to quote something other than the one to whom you are responding is to hit the quotes, and then heavily edit the quotes. Also the fact than you can only quote and do links in the plain text editor, but can only had happy faces in the Rich Text Editor.
Other than that and some other foibles, I like the new format. Kind of like "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?" :D

I think some of the confusion with Windows Media Play is that when it is pre-installed the codecs are there, but when downloaded or upgraded, they are not. I personally like Intervideo's WinDVD. It came with two machines and the control panel floats on top of the image, but can be made to disappear.

Um...you can do quotes and links in the Rich Text editor. If you want to see the "coding" for that stuff, then yes, you need to do it in plain text. But, there is a button to insert links and to quote the post that you are responding to in the Rich Text editor. And you can add emoticons in the Plain Text editor...you just need to know plain text coding (i.e. a colon, dash and right parenthesis will get you: :-) ).

The big thing that I miss is the listing of all the previous posts below the area where you type in your message...it only shows the post that you are replying to now. It was nice sometimes to be able to go back and read the whole thread to remember stuff when typing a response.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your replies.

1) I'm using Windows Media Player 10.
2) I cant play the DVD on RealPlayer 10 as well. But on Realplayer, I can see the menu options and the time moving (timeline for the show?) but there's no audio nor video at all.
3) The DVD is playable on a regular DVD player as well as on Windows Media Player 9 on another pc.
4) Uhm, i'm not sure about this. It's just a regular drama series DVD...

Ok, i'll try to install the K-Lite Codec Pack. I'll post the results once it's done. Thanks again for all your suggestions!

Okay, my suggestions so far:

- It would appear that you do not get Windows Updates, or you elected not to upgrade, because Windows Media Player 11 is the current default Windows Player. Make sure you have all of your Windows Updates and if not, update/download Windows Media Player 11

- Download the VLC application that I suggested in one of the previous posts.

- Download and install the K-Lite Codec pack as you indicated you would

So far, you have eliminated the DVD as the problem. Once you upgrade to Windows Media Player 11, with the additional Codecs, you should be fine. If it does not play, try VLC. If it still does not play, let us know and we can take it from there.

Ok I've finally managed to solve the problem, although it was done thru a totally weird sequence of events. ?:|

I had initially installed the K-Lite Codec pack, but after some time of attempting to read the DVD, a window pops up: "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". The same thing happens with RealPlayer. So I uninstalled the codec pack. I may have somehow installed it wrongly though.

I then did a search on the net and found a Free DVD-Codec at link. With this installed I was finally able to watch the DVD on WMP 10! But the weird thing was that i cannot invoke the subtitles on the DVD.

And then i tried upgrading to WMP 11. I could still watch the DVD but the problem with the subtitles still remains. So i uninstalled the Free DVD-Codec with the intention to try installing K-Lite Codec pack with WMP 11 instead. During the uninstallation process when prompted whether to remove the shared components C:WINDOWSsystem32DVDAudio.ax and C:WINDOWSsystem32DVDVideo.ax, i chose 'no'.

And then voila! I tried WMP 11 again and everything went smoothly, subtitles included. The same for RealPlayer. Dont know what to make out of it all though...

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions! Really appreciate it!

With Pleasure :-) Glad you were able to get it to work. If you need anything else, please ask.
