Hi Chi. I have moved this Discussion to the Other Software & Services Community. The problem you have is not with the burner, but with the application. If the maximum burning speed of your burner is 2X, you have to make sure that you set Nero to burn at that speed and nothing higher. The speed of the DVD itself has nothing to do with this at the moment.
On the screen right before Nero starts to burn, you should have the ability to select the speed of your burn. Do not select "Maximum." Even if there are a number of options, your only options should be 1x or 2x. Try this and see if it works for you. If it does not, please provide any error message you receive.

Well, yes, any lower would increase the burn time. However, the higher the burn rate, the more suceptible your burn may be to errors. Now, this is not to say that there will be any errors. This just means that the likelihood of an error occurring during a burn is higher. Unfortunately, since your laptop can only go as high as 2x, you really do not have many options. For any faster burns, you would have to upgrade your DVD burner.
Also, please remember to select, "Verify Data" during the burn process. This is a major step in the burning process. If the application cannot verify that the data burned onto the DVD is readable, you will get an error message. Otherwise, you can feel safe knowing that the burn was successful.

With Nero, the verification comes after the data is burned to the disc, whether CD or DVD. If there is a significant error that prevents the data from successfully burning (writing) to the disc, the process will stop and you will get an error message. At this time, if you get any error messages or if the burning does not complete successfully, I would check the error message and proceed accordingly. If you get an error message during the reading process, you can still use that disc. Personally, if I get any error messages that stops the burn, I would use another disc. However, I have so many blank CDs and DVDs that throwing one away is not going to hurt me at all. If you only have a minimal amount of discs, I would use discretion when deciding whether or not to reuse a disc.
Once the burning (writing) to the disc is complete, the application will start to verifiy the data. If, for any reason, Nero is not able to verify the data, it will stop and tell you. If the verifcation is successful, you will get a message stating that the data was successfully verified and at this point, you can safely assume that the burn has completed and the data you want is now on that disc.
In a perfect situation, the steps go Read -> Wrte (Burn) -> Verify
Nero has a status log above the progress section telling you what step the application is performing at any given point.
