Hello everyone! I have a quick question about some problems I have been having with my printer on my home network. I just installed it today, but cannot seem to get it to work the way I need it to. I tried emailing Lexmark in their emailing support, but that website must be down or something because it wouldn't go through. Anyway, here is what I originally tried to send them. (I apologize if it seems angry or a bit confusing, I was pretty annoyed when I first typed it!) I inserted info into brackets where it might not be obvious what I mean.
I just purchased this printer [Lexmark X4550] and am having problems with creating a network. Currently, the computer is wired to a PC with Windows XP, and works fine, but the WiFi light is orange [which means the WiFi isn't working or isn't on]. I want to be able to have this computer wired to the PC AND capable of wireless so I can connect my wireless laptop (which has Windows Vista). Currently, the drivers and necessary software are installed on both computers, and my laptop is able to detect the printer. However, this is the problem. When the PC is wired to the printer, the WiFi light is orange and therefore my laptop is not able to detect the wireless signal, and therefore my laptop is not able to use the printer. However, as soon as I unplug the USB cable (which goes from the printer to the PC) the WiFi light turns green and my laptop is able to use the printer. BUT, my PC is therefore unable to use the printer because the USB cable is unplugged. Is there any way so that this printer can be used BOTH by PC (through the USB cable) AND my laptop (with the wireless) at the same time? I do not want to have to unplug the cable from my PC each time I want my laptop to access the printer. For now, my laptop is only able to use the printer when the USB cable is not plugged in to the PC. I do not understand why this printer will not work as both a wired printer to my PC and a wireless printer to my laptop at the same time, without having to unplug the cables. Like I said, it will do one or the other, but not both. The manual did not help, and neither did the FAQ on this website. Any help you can provide would be very appreciated because it is important that this printer work as a networking printer to both a wired device and a wireless device. Thank you!
I am going to try to contact them tomorrow, but hopefully someone else is familiar with this problem and can help me out. I specifically bought this printer because I thought it was capable of working with both my wired PC and my wireless laptop at the same time. Thank you!
Erin

The printer is NOT able to use WiFi and USB at the same time. Apparently, the WiFi adapter makes use of the USB. Take a look at [this document for the "official" word.
Do you use a broadband router with WiFi built into it? If so, then you should be able to connect to the printer through the wireless network created by the router from BOTH computers. This will entail setting up the printer to be on the router's WiFi network. Then, the wired computer (by way of ethernet cable) should be able to access the printer by way of the network and the laptop should be able to do it by way of the wireless network. If you don't have a router with WiFi, then you could get one and network the printer for both computers.
