A new OS version should be what it is: software that runs your computer more efficiently and better than the last OS -- not software that suddenly requires more graphics and system memory just to make it look "cool" like Vista is. The court of consumer public opinion is speaking: if Microsoft is going to develop and release new OSs, we want one that improves speed, efficiency, and security, not one that's a system-resources hog, expensive, and relatively useless as a true upgrade. No wonder XP is still desirable.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit and feel that it is a very high quality product. I have a fairly high end gaming rig and have not experienced any compatability issues with my games or my hardware. If you are seeing slow performance with vista you probably skimped on your processor or memory or are running on dated hardware, but that is to be expected. These types of changes are what keep the computer and electronics industry going and what result in better technology for the consumer. Change is a good thing.

p.s. dreamscene looks awsome

I just want someone to explain to me why I want Vista?

What does it do for me?

I ask this question all the time and I do remember one persons answer was they finally arranged control panel?

WHA WHA WHAT????? who cares about control panel?????

I am being serious, what does Vista do better than XP?

And please do not mention security and the pretty interface

Security is a state of mind........

thanks

Ron

Change is a good thing but only if its a good change. Vista is 1 of those bad changes.

I can only tell you why you don't want Vista 1) It wants tons of space on your HD 2) It wants tons of RAM 3) It wants a gaming class possessor and video card 4) you cant play old games 5) its ugly(the interface) 6) is unstable 7) and its slow

I installed Vista on a 3GHz machine w/ 2GB RAM and a good, mid-range video card w/ 512MB RAM. It slowed the machine down so much that I reverted back to XP. I'm not a gamer, I mainly do office tasks and some web browsing.

I installed Vista on a 1.8 dual core laptop w/ 2GB RAM, it runs fine, it's pretty, but when the laptop is idle, Vista still uses a gig of RAM.

I will admit that I don't have any problems w/ peripherals or drivers.

My biggest problem w/ Vista is indirect. I think that due to Microsoft's actions over the years a lot of software vendors are following their pattern.

Intuit forced Quicken users into a paid upgrade a year or so ago when they stopped supporting a particular file type. Now, if I want to run Vista, I have to upgrade Quicken again since the last version isn't compatible.

Sony is forcing users to run Vista on their new laptops. I have a friend with a new Viao. When he tried to "upgrade" to XP, he found that the laptop will no longer go into any of the power saving modes. When he asked Sony about the problem he was told the machine was not supported for XP. Nice!!!! UGH

I too have a 3.0 Ghz processor, with 2 gigs ram, and 256 megs video memory. I built it for Vista. After a few problems, which were to be expected, I'm doing fine. I have A training, yet am not highly trained. I do have access to a wonderful IT crew at work. Flash still does not work well, but I get by. My next laptop will also be Vista and I am going to build a Dual Core desktp with more Video memory. Then my girl friend will get this one.

It makes more sense than ever to build a system - the break-even point used to be around $2K (w/o display), now a homemade $1K XP system will beat a $1K brand-name Vista box. Never thought I would build my own PC, but I really had no choice - and it worked like a charm (MSI P6n Platinum, E6600, 2 gig PC5300 4-4-4-12 @ 1.9V, 400 gig Seagate, Gigabyte 7300GT 256MB, SB 7.1ZX refurb, Thermaltake cooler, DVD burner, fan controller, card reader, Ultra 500 W PS, XP home OEM - count 'em, it's just under $1K with shipping). Could have bought a faster video card at the same price, but I wanted a fanless design.

I got stuck with Vista when I bought my new HP notebook about five months ago. I wanted XP, but Toshiba and HP weren't offering it any longer on any of the machines that I wanted.
I can now say that I despise Vista. I worked for a company for several years that had Macs running OS X. I hated it, too...and Vista has felt like an inferior, much slower copycat of OS X from day one. When I ordered my HP, I felt confident that a Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/667FSB) and 2GB of RAM would still be speedy with Vista. My old Toshiba with 1.6GHz Pentium M and 512MB of RAM with XP was faster than my new one! And yes, I turned off most of Vista's resource-devouring 'features'.
I finally broke down and paid $150 for XP Pro and spent hours getting all the drivers needed. Works like a dream. I'm tempted to put the Vista backup CD in an envelope and send it back to hell....if i only had the address...

I had XP pro, but ended up with Vista after I replaced my old computer. I've had it a few months now and I'm definitely neutral towards Vista, in fact, I wonder if I shouldn't "downgrade". On a related note, what was MS thinking with Office 2007? While there are many many improvements, there are also a lot of major steps backwards. For example, the "ribbon" lets you access all the features more easily, BUT, you lose the ability to customize the toolbar so as to have fast access to the features you use the most. In Excel, the graphing functions are very highly automated, but woe to you if you need to do something other than high-end color business graphics. The chart wizard is gone, making it necessary to go through multiple point and clicks to customize titles, legends, and sub-titles....and making a black and white combination chart is downright difficult.
I'm currently looking for a second party charting program (or possibly switching to a different software entirely).

Windows Vista is awful compared to XP. If you have a brain in your head then you will stick with XP. Either that or you would switch to Ubuntu Linux which is panning out to to be a serious competitor to Windows. The release of the dreadful Vista shows that it's definitely time to stand up to the Microsoft dominance which is slowing down progress in the computing world. Don';t let them force you into something.

For Office 2007, you can put all the stuff you need on the Quick Access Tool Bar for each program. I mean, you know, it's nuts that they took stuff like Print, Print Preview, Find, Save, Save As, etc and burried it; but you can easily unbury it.

Regarding Office 2007- the 'ribbon' is a PAINFUL non-improvement for those of us who have used Office for years. I had the 2007 trial version for a few weeks and tried to acclimate to the changes, but I'm an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of guy. The Office 2007 changes were purely a makeover for the sake of making a change and looking "fresh". Those of us who rely on Access and Excel every day value the familiarity and productivity of what we have used for 10 or more years much more than it looking pretty.

Thank God, I still had my Office 2003 Professional disc tucked away in my desk. Maybe I need to take it to my safe deposit box.

Vista runs fine on my pc but I've decided to reformat and go back to XP for now. It just feels like things ran a little faster with XP. Once Vista's service pack comes out I will switch back to Vista and see how things go.

Like several posters on here said, what is the point of Vista? Seems to me some things were changed just for change's sake, like Windows Explorer. Aero is cool looking but not a big deal. So for right now I'm switching back.

The thing that I have always understood about Office, even from 4.XX, I only use maybe 15% of it, that's all that most people use; but, everybody's 15% is different.

All that stuff which looks so ridiculous to many of us in Office 2007, that is all the result of things like focus groups. So, now there is much more "stuff" in Office, and i bet my usage is down to 7-8% of what's there.

If you participate in the various Microsoft forums, you find out that the critical point before changes get made is about 800 comments. I am not talking about necessary repairs, i am talking about the user groups getting real changes looked at. Even Microsoft will not appropriate coders to a task which is not demanded by some group or groups.
