Talking about recognizing hardware, Ubuntu even recognized my Internet connection (Rogers Lite-Speed internet, via Motorola SB5101 cable modem), without any work from me! It also detected my CD-RW drive (came with computer) DVD-RW drive (AOpen DVDRW) and my 2 HD

Here is another suggestion that might work--note that I say "might" work. Probably for the cost of Partition Magic you can buy an inexpensive new hard drive, say 100Gb or maybe smaller. Just put in a second Hard Drive and put Ubuntu on that. I believe that in the installation, it will write a boot loader so that you can pick which OS you want to use.
