When you open a folder, it is ALWAYS Windoze Explorer that is used with the opened folder. Do you mean that "drilling down" through folders (i.e. opening a folder and then opening another folder inside that folder) results in new Explorer windows? If so, then you should be able to turn that off with Folder Options in the Control Panels. In the General tab, there should be two options: 1) "Open each folder in the same window" and 2) "Open each folder in it own window":

1!

If you go with "Open each folder in the same window", then the "drilling down" will stay all in one window and will NOT open new windows. If you go with "Open each folder in it own window", then opening each new folder will open a new window.

As to the order of the items in the popup menu for right-clicking, I don't know on that one.

Hi C4Tech. Welcome to PCWorld. :-)

As can be inferred by Smax's stated, this is not a viral problem. Now, in certain situations, it is better to see what one means instead of bing told what is going on. This is one of those times. If you do not know how to add screenshots to this post, please follow the instructions within this Document.

As to the order in which the Right Click option, well, this is tricky. It all depends on the file you select. Folder have different right click features than files, .exe files (Executable) files have different right click options than shortcuts, etc. There is no way to reconfigure this option. Well, let me take it back. There could always be some type of registry change to affect the layout of the Right Click option but I would strongly advise not trying to reconfigure the registry on your own.

I will disagree a little. While I agree that I kind of doubt that a virus did such things, it is possible that some sort of malware (including a virus) could do something like this. But, I frankly can't say whether or not a virus let to the issues that you are dealing with.

As to the popup menu order of items, I can say that one my desktop running XP, right-clicking on a folder results in the following "choices" in order: Open, Browse with Paint Shop Pro, Explore, Open Command Window here, etc. Normally, Explore should be second, so it is obvious to me that Paint Shop Pro (which came with my Dell) made registry modification to insert that command into the popup menu. Further, I have the Command Window program from Micro$oft's Powertoys for Windoze XP installed, which results in the 4th command being in the popup menu. The point is that it is obvisous that you can change the items shown in that popup menu and thus likely the order of items. I would think that there are utilities that can manage/modify the menu. [This one appears to be able to do it, but I don't know for sure. I don't know if it will do what you want or not. Try it or other software at your own risk. But, it might give you a place to start.

It is conceivable that any "abnormality" could be the result of a viral infection within a computer. People are too quick to assume that there is a virus in a computer when something does not appear as it should. Granted, there are files that I have come across that were tough to delete because the "Delete" and other options were disabled. However, that is just one example.

Thanks for providing an alternative for C4 to try and change the order of his or her right click function. C4, if it either does not work, or does not provide the flexibility you want, please stay away from trying to change the registry.

I think I understand your problem. Folders now open by default in Explorer mode (with the tree pane on the left). If that's the problem, here's how to fix it. I'm checking these instructions in XP as I type, so they may be different with other versions of Windows, but not by much.
# In Explorer, select Tools>Folder Options.
# Click the File Types tab.
# In the list of 'Registered file types,' select (NONE) Folder (not to be confused with "(NONE) File Folder")
# Click the Advanced button.
# In the Edit File Type dialog box, select Open, click Set Default
# Click OK to close one dialog box, than again for the other one.
That should do it.

And it looks like that can solve the other problem of Explore being listed first in the right-click popup menu. If Open is set to the default, I am guessing that it will also appear first in the popup menu. Good catch!

Hi Smax and Lincoln. As a sidenote, would this option work the same in this situation: With multiple drives/partitions, if someone wanted to drag and drop a file from one drive/partition to another, the default action is "Copy." However, if someone performed that same action within the same drive, the default action is "Move." Is there a way to configure the system to use the same action regardless of what drive/partition?

While it is certainly possible that there is some utility that might do it, I am not aware of any way to change the default function of drag and drop. You can make a drag and drop on the same drive into a "copy" rather than a "move" by holding down the Control key will dragging and dropping. Similarly, you can turn a "copy" into a "move" when dragging from one drive to another by holding down the Shift key, I believe.

That worked thanks.I didnt know it would be so easy to fix. What happen I slaved my drive with an infected hard drive .My system got infected .Any time i double click any of my drives it stated an error message .I had to right click the drive to open it .When i right cllcked the drives I saw the option as 0pen(o) Explorer,Search,Open . I went to several forums an manage to remove the Open(o) option .Thats how I ended up with the folders opening in explorer. I think you should write this tip in your magazine because a number of persons had this similar problems on the web forums
