I posted this post on the apple.com forum as well.

discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1164614&stqc=true

I have an Advent laptop with Windows XP.
Quicktime used to work - not sure if Software Distribution 3.0 killed it or if a Quicktime update killed it.

Anyway - I got an iPod Nano 3rd gen the other day.

No disc with it because it is new, so I downloaded iTunes, which comes with Quicktime.

iTunes would not open once installed - the error message was something like "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Microsoft about this problem". So I did - about four times.

I tried Quicktime and it said buffer overrun. Another time it said something else about not being able to open.

I tried updating my drivers, deleting iTunes and Quicktime (had to manually delete Quicktime, when I was in Add/Remove programs it encountered a Fatal Error while uninstalling. Cleared up the registry and application data afterwards).

Restarted, downloaded iTunes again, and all of the above happened again.

So I downloaded earlier versions from apple via filehippo.com, who keep a back catalogue - and the same things happened.

I have tried looking at my System Restore calender to see what could have been downloaded that would interfere. I noticed that software distribution 3.0 had been installed many times on different occasions - other than that, nothing relevant.

I tried using msconfig to stop all services except iTunes helper and QTtask or something. iTunes did not lauch after restarting with the new configurations.

I tried using Songbird - uninstalled it after I found the iPod had synced but did not recognise any music afterwards. The music was in wav and I tried mp3 as well. Same thing if I dragged and dropped via My Computer.

I have downloaded NET Framework 3.0, and I have downloaded a WMP Plugin - a shareware plugin that is supposed to allow Windows Media Player to sync with the iPod. The Windows Media Player 11 did not recognise the plugin, hence NET Framework 3.0 and the associated updates etc.

I hope it works. << note - WMP did not recognise the plugin after either >>

I have scanned with AVG Anti Spyware (Windows Defender did not unistall properly and prohibits reinstallation of Windows Defender, registry cleaning and service stopping etc did not work). I have scanned with aol anti spyware, AVG Antivirus and SpyBot Search and Destroy.

Of course, Windows Firewall does recognise iTunes in the appropriate software exception list.

What do you think I should try next? Has anybody else had similar problems?

Hi ColdElephant. Welcome to PCWorld. :-)

Please do not latch onto someone else's Discussion, especially if that Discussion has been resolved. I have split your post off and created its own Discussion so that others can find your Discussion more easily. Also, this is not a Desktop issue. This is an issue with the iTunes application. So, I have moved your Discussion from the Desktop Community to the Other Software and Services Community.

Now, have you tried to install the iTunes application within Safe Mode? If you have not and do not know how to get to Safe Mode, please review this Document.

Hi

I've downloaded both the US and UK versions of iTunes 7.4.3

I've tried installing in safe mode - but a message pops up telling me my administrator has set policies to prevent installation.

That applies to iTunes and wmpod as well.

Ahhh, okay, now we are getting somewhere. Your second sentence says a lot. If you are not the owner/administrator of that computer, you may not have rights to install applications. At this point, you have two options:

- Contact the owner/administrator of that computer and have him or her install iTunes

OR

- Go back into Safe Mode through the Administrative Account. This will give you complete access to do whatever you need to do, including install iTunes

Now, if you are the owner of this computer, you really should not have this problem. If the Administrative account is password protected, you will need that password to access it in Safe Mode.

My computer displayed an icon for the administrator when I booted through safe mode - and it didn't need a password.

I am the owner and administrator therefore - and the same messages popped up.

Okay, then I really do not know what to tell you. I do not have a need for iTunes; however, I just went to Apple's website and downloaded the same version you have. I then installed it without issue. I even verified that we had the same version, 7.4.3. I opened it and navigated through it with no problem whatsoever.

It would seem that no one on Apple's forum site has any ideas either.

I only have two other suggestions for you:

- The Windows Firewall is not very flexible and frankly, it's not very good. If you are having problems opening and/or installing this application, disable the Firewall and try again. If it works successfully, I would strongly advise using another firewall

- I did get a message to restart the computer. Now, I highly doubt you haven't done this but restart your computer and try again.

I have been following the thread but have not had anything to add since MPH Enterprises|~44270] has been giving you good options. I have to admit that I am also stumped at this point. There must be something on your system that the iTunes installer does NOT like. The only other thing that I can think to suggest at this point is to call Apple. You should get one [complimentary support call with the purchase of your iPod (as long as it is within 90 days of the purchase of the iPod). The only other thing that I can think to suggest at this point would be complete re-install of Windoze and such, which would be a major pain in the rear.

Hi

Well I've deleted CC Cleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG antivirus, AdAware...and rolled back my C-Media Realtek Audio AC97 driver because after updating it was not working properly - it is now.

I have also downloaded and installed McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 - it only found tracking cookies - which have been removed.

I know there must be something on my system that iTunes doesn't like - I don't know what it is though. I am aware that there is a command I can type into my run box from the Start menu that will cause my computer to list all components and system information in one window so that I could copy and paste it here (not just a system summary, but a component list included).

Do either of you happen to know what the command is? I thought it was sysinfo or something, I tried chkdsk.

By "it," do you mean iTunes? Or do you mean the driver rollback?

Well, I do not know exactly what you need; however, I pulled up this website that lists some Useful Commands. When I tried msinfo32, I was able to go through the System Information window. I do not know if this is what you meant.

The driver rollback was 'it' - the computer recognises the iPod Nano 3rd gen as a usb mass storage device and calls it 'drive E'.

My internet is faster now I've installed McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 and did a scan.

I only noticed a couple of things in my System Restore calendar that are of any significance - quicktime updates and software distribution service 3.0 being installed a few times.

Is there a way of me being able to pull up full system and component details and putting them on here for folk to see?

Cold, click on the link that I provided in my last post. There are over 150 Run Commands. If msinfo32 is not what you need, that site has plenty to try.

Cold, as much as I, or anyone on this forum, would like to be able to help you solve this problem, unless someone can decipher your last post, you really should contact Apple as Smax mentioned.

I believe your computer meets all necessary requirements. You already have tried several different troubleshooting techniques. You really should contact Apple and find out why you are not able to install and properly run iTunes.

Ok - here is another interpretation.

Maybe you could get a PC World rep to look at the thread? I bought my computer from them at one of their London stores.

Please do not mistake PCWorld, the store with PCWorld, the magazine. One has no affiliation with the other. You really should contact Apple and ask a technician what you may or may not be doing to get your iTunes application running successfully.

I am not sure what else anyone here can suggest. Your only other alternative, as has already been mentioned, is to do a reinstallation of Windows. Once Windows is reinstalled, install iTunes first and see if you can install and use it as normal.

This should be a last resort. I am not sure why you are hesitant to call Apple. You spent good money on the iPod. You should be able to use that software associated with it (iTunes & Quicktime). Call Apple and see if there is anything their technicians can suggest that:

- has not been suggested already

- you have not tried on your own

Once you exhaust all other avenues, then we can worry about a reinstall.

in my opinion sometimes the best thing to do if problems occur is just to reinstall windows. obviosly itunes doesnt like what is on your computer. to reinstall you will have to buy a cd usually around a hundred dolllars. my cousin also had problems with itunes. after a reinstall everything was fine. also if you have anything to back up consider backing them up to your ipod.

That may be the case; however, in any situation, a reinstallation should be the last resort. More often than not, a simple reconfiguration can fix a problem. If there is a software conflict, it would be more prudent to find the problem instead of burying it underneath a reinstallation.

Also, depending on the circumstance, there may be no need to buy anything. The laptop could already have a recovery partition or he or she may already have the Windows Installation CD. In any case, it is best to get to the root of a problem, not to just hide it.

Additional info in this thread here;

discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5533210#5533210

The buffer overrun means that QuickTime cannot function, ergo neither can iTunes.

The buffer that is being overrun is probably a sound buffer.

Does anybody know how to alter the mime's and sound buffer settings for QuickTime without having to open QuickTime or any QuickTime programs?

Can it be done through Windows somehow?
