Have you tried uninstalling the sound card drive in the Device Manager and then re-booting Windoze and letting it "find new hardware" and reinstall a driver for it?

Hi Chris. Welcome to PCWorld. :-)

Okay, first, I renamed the title of this Discussion so that everyone can know exactly what is wrong. Now, you really didn't go into what you have done to troubleshoot this problem so I am going to throw out a suggestion:

- Go back to the Device Manager window and Uninstall/Disable the drivers for the sound card

- Restart your computer

- Once your computer restarts, you will get the New Hardware Dialog box. At this point Windows should automatically find the drivers. If not...

- Go to Realtek and download and install the latest drivers

If this does not help, or you have already tried this, please post back and let us know. Also, please tell us what you have done as far as troubleshooting up till this point.

Nah, hah, Mr. Quick Draw! I beat you to the punch this time! :^0 LOL

Although, your instructions were more detailed, so I will call it a wash! ;-)

Ahh, you didn't say anything about a game. All you mentioned was that you did not see any audio device under Control Panel. Please clarify what happens during game play.

Also, if this is a PCI sound card and not the onboard sound card, have you tried this card in another computer?

Yes. If, after downloading and installing the drivers, you get the same situation, post and we can try some more avenues.

Okay, let's start over. According to your first post, you mentioned that "volume control will not open and under sounds and sudio devices in control panel,, it says no audio device present or w/e it says that there is no sound card installed..." Soon after that, you mention to us that "i dotn understand why it works for one game i have and nothign else"

When I open up the Sound and Audio Devices Properties window, I see exactly what I believe I should see:

- Volume tab:
Realtek AC97 Audio

Device Volume
* Low -> High
* Mute
* Place volume icon in the taskbar
Advanced...

Speaker Settings
* Use the settings below to change individual speaker volume and other settings.
Speaker Volume... Advanced...

OK Cancel Apply

- Audio tab:
Sound Playback
Default device
* Realtek AC97 Audio
Volume Advanced...

Now, if you do not see this, and if you have installed all the latest drivers for your sound card, my thought is that your sound card is either died or dying. This leads me to your second quote. I have no idea what you mean by some Super Mario Bros theme or anything like that. If you get some audio at all, then that is something to investigate. If you do not get any sound whatsoever, then you may want to invest in a PCI sound card.

I do see that you say that you only get sound during this game play but nothing else. That is very peculiar, to say the least. If your computer has an available PCI slot, I would strongly advise you to buy a basic sound card just to test. If, once you install the card and the drivers, you get sound as you normally should, then you have found your problem. If you get the same situation, then we can investigate further.

Okay, I did a bit more digging. Please let us know if this is your computer:

If it is, there is no available PCI slots for you to test a PCI sound card. So, your next, and possibly only option, is to try an USB sound card. Please review this list. This is a collection of available sound cards that you can use just to test this theory. If you are able to get full sound from one of these devices, you have a bad internal sound card.

Still more suggestions...

The only other possibility is the way you have your speaker configuration set. According to Cnet.com, your sound card is 7.1 capable. Now, unless you actually have:

- 7.1 speaker (6 speakers and a subwoofer)

- the device configured for 7.1 sound

- the volume control configured for 7.1 sound

...you may get the situation you are in now. So, if you only have two speakers, try this:

- Check the driver utility and make sure that the speaker configuration is set for 2 speakers and nothing else

- Check the Control Panel again and make sure that the Speaker configuration is set to 2 Desktop speakers

- Check to make sure you have the speaker plugged in securely

Here is the kicker. Even if you had your speakers configured incorrectly, you should still get some sort of sound. This leads me to believe that the card is dead, or at the very least, failing. Other than what I have listed in my last three posts, I am not sure what else you can do.
