I lost all sound

My sound quit working. I have windows xp home office. It worked great and then it was gone. None of the trouble shooting in windows could fix the problem. One clue. When I test the microphone, I can get the green bars to respond, but only a litlle. So some sound can go in but none comes out. could it be something I downloaded? or an update? Geek Squad did some remote trouble shooting but could not find the probelm either. So yes, my speakers are plugged in and nothing is muted in the volume control. Any ideas?

try replugging it, if that doesn't work reinstall the sound driver. What did you install before the sound stop working?
