Allow me to express my heartfelt appreciation and thanks to every one of you who have taken the time to reply, particularly those that have given peeks at their own setups. For reference to the latest post, I'm using Windows XP Home Edition right now, the copy that came with my system, though I keep it fully updated. Even with a new system I'm kind of hesitant about switching to Vista because I've heard it is such a resource hog, not to mention a bit buggy.

i was wondering, are you compfortable building it yourself? if so then would you feel fine salvaging off you old one (RAM and case only, possibly)? if so then i need to know what form factor you case is, the maxium size for the motherboards, and ram speed (PC? ????). thx, cause i can find one for pretty cheap that way and do you prefer intel or amd? (amd is probally cheaper)

I appreciate the effort you took to link the different components but a few of them are duplicates, so I can't see everything. :)

Don't downgrade to Vista!!! That's my only comment. Apart from that, the new configuration looks pretty good. I'm doing something similar at this time, but I'm sticking to Windows XP Pro. I'm using an MSI P6N Platinum motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33 GHz CPU.

Kcihtred2 - You may have some problems with the OS, not the Vista part, but the 64bit part. There are noted lack of program availability of programs that run on the 64bit version of both Vista and XP. Drivers could be a problem with the 64bit.

Now, I know that if someone purchases the 32bit version of Vista Home Premium, you can get the 64bit version from MS, I'm not sure of the charge. If you had purchased Vista Ultimate, it would have both on the disc.

Before you break the seal on the OS box, do a little research to find out if the programs you want to run are compatible with the 64bit version and the same goes for the drivers for you devices, including the motherboard. When I get home this evening (after 8 EDT), I will see what I can find out. I installed Vista HP (32bit) on my new build and it went flawlessly, with both the motherboard and graphics cards having Vista drivers on their CD's.

If I remember correctly it is $9.99 and they send you a Disc. Not to sure, but they might give you the choice of DL it.

Hi Guys, Actually I think DL with lightscribe would count as DL / DS as you flip the DVD to burn your label. coastie65

The Power Supply wattage is good. As long as you have enough connections, and the right connections (SATA versus IDE), you should be fine.

ok, well if thats the case then, go out to best buy or somewhere and get the 32-bit edition. Itll be like $10 more, but itll be a reinstallable disk

If you buy the 32bit or the 64bit at the store they would be the same price. If you buy the 64bit and then go back to the store the 32bit would be the full price as it would be a complete separate package.

Ordering the DVD from MS for $10 is a bargain. Of course it will delay installation slightly. Never having seen a 64bit Windows DVD, I do not know if the same COA works, but I suspect it does, because the Vista Ultimate disks have both versions on the single DVD.

We will all go 64bit some day, but its just not ready for prime time.
