I just installed an HP C7180 and noticed the HPZipm12.exe process was eating 90% of my CPU. I contacted HP and they had me uninstall and re-install. I did and now HPZipm12.exe takes up 12% to 40%. I will take the darn thing back if it continues to take CPU cycles while it's idle. Please help with any ideas.

Hi Photoguy. Welcome to PCWorld. :-)

Please provide us with your computer's full specification including the Power Supply wattage. (You can find the Power Supply wattage on the inside of the computer on a sticker on the side of the Power Supply.)

From http://searchtasks.a...p?File=HPZipm12 :
"Because of its role as, effectively, a printer status information gathering task, this task should be left running since, without it, you will not get useful information from the System Tray HP icon for your printer which will think the printer is disconnected."

It may be that most printers these days will take some CPU cycles but generally it shouldn't be matter a lot though that's JMHO.

Regards,
JB

I'm Running XP Home edition on one XP Pro on the other, free Zone Alarm on both, 1 gig memory on both free AVAST anti-virus on both. Don't know the power supply wattage... If I must take the boxes apart for that I'll just return the HP and get a Canon or Epson. Right now, I don't see many more HP devices in my future.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Photoguy. Okay, this is not about taking anything apart. This is about determining what is going on with your computer. Now, we only need information about the one computer that you have connected to the printer. If you have a network, then that definitely changes things.

So, if you would please Right Click on "My Computer" and click "Properties" on the computer that you have connected with the printer. Once you do that, post everything you see on the General tab. If you have a network, please do this on both computers.

As far as the Power Supply, all you have to do is open the case and read the label off of the Power Supply. We need to know the maximum wattage.

Hi Thanks for the help.

They're on a Netgear Router (wired) One is a AMD Athlon XP2100+ at 1.73 GHz 1 gig of memory. XP Pro SP 2

The other is an AMD Sempron 3100 + at 1.81 GHz and a gig of memory both power supplies are 750 watts XP Home SP2

I've been an IT prifessional since starting as an Autocode and IBM Assembly programmer in 1972 and retired as VP of Development on Sum platforms for a telecom company. I strongly feel that any device should use no or next to no resources at idle. I understand that they may occasionally poll, but this piece of marvelous software design is using over 30% and occasionally over 90% at idle

All thanks for your help. Ireceived this reply from HP this AM. Apparently, it's considered "normal" for their process to eat CPU cycles while the device is idle. I am returning the printer and buying something without an "H" in the name.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for writing back.

+Paul, As you said that HPZipm12.exe is taking about 30% CPU on one of the
re-installed computers, and about 8% on the other one thsi may be due to the
system resources and its a normal one and no need to worry about the usage of
the cpu.It does not effect any of the system resources.+

+Thank you for contacting HP and providing us an opportunity to serve you, If
you have any questions or I can be of any assistance in future, please contact
us. It will be my pleasure to assist you.+

Have a Wonderful Day!!

Sincerely,

Mike

Hi Photoguy. It is unfortunate that you have to return the printer. I guess the last advice I can give you is to try to find the CPU Usage information of the printer before you buy it. This information will be very hard to find just by reading the side of the box. You may have to do a lot of digging. But I have a feeling you will find the exact printer you need.

Since your problem was not officially resolved, I am going to mark this Discussion as "Assumed Answered." If there is anything else we can help you resolve, please ask.

Thanks very much for the help and quick responses. I am in process of evaluating the replacement. The 7180 is back at the store already. Keep up the good work! As a agiing geek, I will always be playing with new equipment. I depend on PCWorld more and more for advice as my old co-workers join the ranks of the retired alsop.

Photoguy - I was following this off and on, and with interest as I have an HP6180 All-In-One printer. Mine is connected to a network as well, wirelessly, that contains both Vista and XP computers. I have not seen this kind of drain on any of my computers. But, the 6180 is a little different, and one of the reasons I chose it was for the automatic document feed on the scanner. I noticed that the 7180 is a lot more expensive and although it does not have the automatic feed on the scanner plate, it must have a lot more bells and whistles.

I disagree with some of the postings, however, as the little monitoring program that resides in the system tray may not have been necessary. The predecessor to that was called FX Toolbox and is one my XP machines as it came with my color laser. Well, yes, it does tell me the toner level, but so does the display on the front of the printer. FX Toolbox does not run under Vista, but my Vista computers print to the laser just fine, thank you. That new monitor does, and is on my Vista machine, but I have not noticed any slowdown of my machine. If I do, I will just disable the monitoring. I may try to disable it this evening to see what effect, if any, it has.

I have been am still am a satisfied HP printer user ever since the Original Deskjet came out almost 20 years ago. Up until then I had to make do with a dot matrix.

Hi RGreen and Photoguy. I have a Brother All-in-One Inkjet printer and a Lexmark Laser printer. My CPU usage is minimal, repeat minimal, even with both printers running at the same time. Granted, I do not have a network setup or running Vista but you get the idea.

I guess it wouldn't do any good to push the manufacturers to have them add Average CPU Usage to the specifications, huh?

I think having access to average resource usage for peripherals would be a great thing! If the manufacturers would be willing to do that, i think it would be a great way to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Once again, thanks to all of the folks who took their valuable time to help. Now if you folks know some way to make the Cincinnati Bengals or Reds competitive.......

Although not a serious Baseball fan, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Reds. I was born in Cincinatti, and remeber as a young boy attending a few games with my Dad at the old Reds Stadium. Not Riverfront, the one that Riverfront replaced as we moved from Cincinatti in 1950 after I attended the 1st grade.

Since the Bengals are a more recent additon, I have not emotional tie to them.

RGreen,

That would have been Crosley Field. Is was lucky enough to go to the last game there and the first game at Riverfront in 1970. I remember going to Crosley with my Dad. We had first row seats at 1'st base and Ted Kluszuski signed a ball for me! Big Klu was my idol growing up in the 50's. I don't know what my Dad did with the vall when I was away in the Navy.
