From everything I've read concerning incompatibilities with Vista, I have come to the conclusion that either all of the vendors were asleep, or they thought if they all refused to spend the time and effort to make their programs compatible with the future that they could go merrily along their way doing nothing. They probably thought that then MS would have to come to their rescue or the populas would not switch to Vista because they would not be able to run their antiquated dinosours. Guess what? Minor league baseball cannot go to the Big Show and dictate the parameters under which they game will be allowed to continue. And just because a lot of the people that have sway over the readers of this and other news letters, whether because of monetary considerations or the lack of ambition to keep up with the times, 70 to 80 percent of what I read is just plain BS. I struggled for 3 years with XP and am now finally comfortable and content with the progress. Its a new day, wake up.

HP has been promising a new driver for their Officejet 7310 printer since January. The automatic (as opposed to manual) duplex print function does not work properly and HP has known about the problem since mid '06. They've promesed me a fix "any day" since May '07 and no fix in sight. I'd like to know if any "duplex" capable All-In-One printer works without any problems.

I bought two new Vista machines this year. It has cost me more for the upgrades and new hardware that would run on it than the cost of the machines. I have a new version of Peachtree Accounting that is supposed to be Vista compatible and won't work at all with the new OS.

Northlite - keep after Quicken. I just upgraded to 2008 and it works find (my policy is to upgrade every other year) I am coming off of 2006 where everything I wanted worked except for the cash register ka-ching. I did not use billminder. BTW, the 2008 version can set bill minder up as a Gadget on Vista.

TNgizmo - which HP Color Laserjet did you have problems with? HP has the Univeral Print Driver for ALL Laserjets based on the PCL language, which only excludes the 1000 entery level series. This driver works fine, and I have been using it with both my CLJ 2605dn and my LJ P2015dn. Every function on them works except the toner level, and the pop-up with toner lever on every print is annoying anyway. I had disabled it on my XP machine.

Scanners that use Twain drivers most likely will not be supported under Vista. This is a decision by the providers in that all such scanners are no longer in the supply chain and have not been so for a while. Mine is 5 years old and still hooked to an XP machine, even though the image is then transferred to my Vista machine via a home network.

I'm runnign the current release of their VISTA driver as found on the HP site. I tried their "generic" driver, but the duplex print function still prints in "flip" mode only. I've had several conversations with their 2nd level support personnel and they acknowledge the problem. They have been giving lip service to a FIX since early this year, with no release yet. Their support personnel have promised me all kind of incentives to wait, but my patience has run out and I'm currently looking for an "All-In-One" printer that works with VISTA. HP and Microsoft indicate that the problem is with the other. There seems to be no sincere effort to resolve the issue. I think they are hoping those of us that have the problem will just give up and go away.

I wonder if on any VISTA computer, the Integrated Duplex printing function works on ANY HP PRINTER!!!

HP sales and support personnel are generally clueless re the Duplex print problem, but if you make it their level 2 support personnel they acknowledge the problem and always indicate a new driver is due any time. I give up. I'm going to ask HP to give me my money back including the extra ink costs so I can find a printer that works!!!

Thank you rgreen for your consolement on Quicken.

I too do the every 2 and never had this amount of problems with Quicken, I got it when it first came out, with this 2007 version I have had to reinstall it a few times, try all the suggestions to get billminder to work, lost downloaded data for the one account I use it for, in short it's been a pain. My 2005 version works fine on Vista but I came so far waiting for the patch that would make it all work fine that I would have to enter a years worth of data in to my old 2005 back up to be up to date and use that - I will probably load it on my laptop and do a little at at time - I was going to start fresh but I have 10 yrs of data to let go of.

To top this all off they have decided like MS Money to do away with the Basic version and only offer New User and then it goes to Deluxe so unless this changes next yr I probably won't be buying Quicken again. I am also not going to pay for 2008 when they released it prior to even fixing the problems in 2007.

I have had no problems with two sided printing either in portrait or landscape, nor in flip over or flip up duplexing. This is with the original drivers on my XP machine, and with the Universal Print Driver for Laserjets on Vista.

I also have a All-In-One Photosmart C6180 that came with a Mac disc, a Win2K/XP disc and a Vista disc. The Vista installation prints automatically, but only in the flip over position. The XP driver does not duplex automatically at all. This has an add-in duplex adapter, the two Laserjets have it built in at the factory.

I don't know if there is a difference between a "Laserjet" and an "Officejet 7310", but HP support personnel have sent me two cd's with different drivers to try and I've downloaded two "unreleased" drivers that they had me try, though I suspect they were the same as the two CD drivers they sent me. None worked.

I now have the Officejet 7310 "temporarily" attached to a notebook w XP. Print jobs from the notebook work fine, but when I try to print on the 7310 from my VISTA Premium computer it still screws up the duplex prints by printing in the "flip" mode only.

I have been running the Vista Ultimate 32 with little problems that some tweaking won't fix have have very few complaints other than if you load the 64 bit version as I did when I first bought it, beware, alot of programs will not work with it, only the 32 bit version. Even Windows has some products of their own that will not work (The Finger Print Reader for one). Most companies advertise that they are Vista compatable and are, but only the 32 bit version, they don't tell you that up front until you purchase the product and it too late. Check with them first before you by. I took the 64 bit off here and had to call Microsoft to get another activation number to use the 32 bit version. It's a one time shot, if you mess up the first time, it's a pain the second time.

This sounds like a problem with the condition of the computer. Update your antispyware application, do a scan and defragment the hard drive. Run a maintenance application to remove bloat from the registry and other areas of the operating system; apply all the Office 2007 updates.

Certainly Office 2007 is compatible with Vista.

I hve Vista Buisiness and can't play any DVD as "a thread reaveals...ILLEGAL...NO RIGHT to technology..Windows is shutting down to protect MY PC..."! No OEM VISTA InterVideo, Legally purchased WinDVD 5,6 or MediaOne, HP Colorsmart All-in-One, Adobe Photoshop/Premiere software will work! Found mention of 'Windows Media Technologies' and MS site has link to E-, 5 E-s in last week and NO RESPONSE. Attitude of 'suck-it-up, Turkey, go F... yourself' has got to stop... New, long saved-for Thinkpad T60p is less functional than my Thinkpad T20 with Windows 2000. I am contacting the WI Office of Consumer Protection and all should do the same in their state. Press for action against BOTH MFR's who hype an OS for sales and can't support it and MS whic turns a deaf ear while banking zillions...

I would suggest you post your problems in the Windows forum one at a time. There is a faily talented group in the community, and together solutions may be found. This particular area is a general discussion and most of the problem solvers won't see it under the heading. When you post, please be sure to provide specifics of your system, programs loaded and error messages.

There is a significant difference in that the Laserjet uses the same technology as in xerox copiers with toner fused to the paper, and the Officejet 7310 use small ink cartridges.

After reading your post on duplexing, I retrieved the duplex adapter that had been in my Photosmart 8250 and installed it in my Photosmart C6180 All-In-One. (They use the same adapter). I initially had the same problem.

Experimenting around with the settings I found a configuration window to apply the two sided printing module.

The path is convoluted and this is for the C6180, but see if your drivers don't have a similar setting buried somewhere.

Start -> Control Panel -> Printer (Under Hardware & Sound) -> (Double Click on Printer Icon) -> Printer -> Properties -> Device Settings Tab. At this point verify that the duplex unit shows up.

Then click on the General Tab -> Printing Preferences -> Features Tab -> Printer Services (at bottom of window) and then on the Configuration Tab. Under accessories check the box for the Automatic Two Sided Printing Module, then click the APPLY button. Close all windows and reboot. This change won't take effect without a reboot.

Let us know how it comes out.

All updated and upgrades were done and still the programs won't work. I called the people I had the problem with and they were the ones who also told me it is not compatable with the 64 bit version, nothing wrong with my system at all, they just don't work.

Mr. Green,

You & I both are strong MS supporters, but is the best we can do is to "post your problems in the Windows forum one at a time"? Several of these guys have spent $500 -- $3,000. Would we put up with this type of service with a car that we bought? I think we would be calling it a "lemon" and already been asking for a replacement or a refund.

Until MS AND the software vendors get it together, there will be a whole host of unsatisfied customers waiting to buy a total package that works off the shelf. Apple, unfortunately, has come closer than some others -- but my prediction is that the first real outfit to manufacture a total, problem-free, off-the-shelf, hard & software package product will scratch a HUGE unsatisfied itch (from millions of scratchers)! MS has as good a shot at it as anyone -- and I hope that they are the first to do it -- but as we all can tell from these types of community forums -- no one has accomplished this goal yet.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Strong, but not yet satisfied, MS user

Hi Mph,

It has been almost a week and I still have not heard from Kellie about the signature "advertising." Vacation? Trick or Treating? Discussions with the higher-ups? My quoting the rules too stupid/confusing/pointed or whatever?

Thanks for wanting an answer, too!

Hi Ward. I really cannot speak for her. I know she definitely will respond to you as soon as possible. Have you sent her a Private Message as of yet?

You may have noticed that some of the individuals who had large signatures have since reduce the size of the images within the signatures. Now, this could be directly related to your initial concern or it could be related to Kellie asking them to reduce the size of the image. Either way, you have definitely expressed your opinion and I am sure Kellie will get back to you as soon as she can.

Have tried the same exercise a dozen times (many times while on line with HP support personnel). After several calls with level two support I finally reached a tech that actually had an Officejet 7410 (basically the same as 7310) attached to a VISTA computer, and she was able to duplicate the problem. No matter what she did, the 7410 printed in "FLIP" mode. This was the first time (according to the tech) that anyone at HP had diplicated the problem. Up till then they were saying my computer or BIOS (, or, or ) etc was at fault.

I spoke with my HP "Case Manager" Sept 5, and he indicated that HP is "STILL" working on a new driver, but could not offer a date for release.

Trust me, there is no way to make an Officejet 7310 (and probably any other HP Officejet) printer frint duplex properly.

For those that need the 64bit version of Vista (and XP) it is fine, but for 90+% of the consumers at this point, I would stay away from them.

The 64bit platform is the future, but the number of compatible programs and drivers is limited. In several years we may all be moving toward the 64bit platform, but at this point it is just not ready for prime time. This is one of the reasons that all versions of Vista (except Ultimate) have only the 32bit version on the DVD. In fact, on the Ultimate DVD not only are there the two versions of Ultimate, but both 32bit and 64bit versions of Internet Explorer 7 as well.
