Why would my PC want to make my floppy drive read RAW format instead of FAT? I haven't used the floppy for a while but when I needed it I put in a new disk but the drive said no disk found, after several tries with other disks I checked, my computer, A: drive, properties and found that the format it read was RAW. I installed a new floppy drive and the properties were the same Please advise a fix for this.

Hi Cibafan. Welcome to PCWorld. :-)

Some questions for you:

- Is this a custom build computer or a manufactured computer?

- If custom, what is the manufacturer and model number of your motherboard?

- If manufactured, what is the manufacturer and model number of the computer?

- If custom, are you sure you connected the Floppy Drive to the FDD connection of the motherboard?

We need to know more about your computer, and its hardware and software.

mphenterprises,

Thanks for assisting, sorry for the delay I was away for a couple of days. I built this computer. The motherboard is Asus 5P5800-SE, pentium 4 intel chip running at 3gz. 2gb of crucial. Windows XP with service pack 2.

I went in and checked, the cable is correct according to mb manual, both connections are tight and it lights up. The problem is that system hardware says it is operating correctly. I tried to update the driver, Windows says the one I was using was the correct driver The new floppy is a NEC I just bought from Newegg. It will not read or format a disk. When I look at properties it says the file system is RAW, I only see that on Photoshop.

Okay, your last sentence struck a cord..."When I look at properties it says the file system is RAW, I only see that on Photoshop." According to this site, a RAW file format is digital photography's equivalent of a negative in film photography: it contains untouched, "raw" pixel information straight from the digital camera's sensor.

Now, you say that you only see this in Photoshop, correct? Also, if I am following you, when you insert a blank Floppy Disk, the Floppy Drive does not recognize it, correct?

Here is my first suggestion:

- Uninstall Photoshop temporarily

- Once completely uninstalled, put a Floppy Disk in the Floppy Drive and attempt to save anything other than a file you originally used in Photoshop, like a .doc file

- If it doesn't work, please post the exact message you receive...

- If it does work, open Windows Explorer (Right Click on My Computer and click Open) and drag any file into the A: drive

- Again, if it doesn't work, post the exact message

- If it does work, reinstall Photoshop and try to save any file onto a Floppy Disk

Photoshop removed. restarted PC. Tried to drag and drop a word document and the message came up

Insert a disk into A: drive. Tried clicking on same file and copying using copy / paste. Same message.
