My Compac Presario Laptop is 6 months old, came with Vista Home Premium. I have IE7 as my browser, Yahoo as my ISP, and Yahoo Mail Basic.

Sometimes, I click on somebody's URL to send an email and the Windows Mail box shows up. I have carefully filled it out and when I click on Send, I get a msg. that says not able to deliver (or something like that); and something about IMAP not being supported (?)

I emailed Yahoo Tech Help people and they suggested I get the higher email service they provide, which costs x amount of $/year; I said No thanks. Every time I go into Help and Support, I do not get a clear answer.

I would really like to be able to use Windows Mail. I truly appreciate all your help. Thank you :-) !

You mean when you try to type an email to someone it says wrong email and sends it back to you? Are you sure you typed in the correct email address?

Hey there, when i was with yahoo, my vista laptop, 2 months old was not working on there, and some times after i was sending a message the screen comes up, proxy sever not available or it will just return to the screen where i was sending the message but the message never left, so i would rate is the best is using hotmail(MSN) as i have not had any problems with my laptop, and yahoo just trying to get you to spend money on it, but if it will not work on the normal yahoo the better version will proberly not work as well, see if there are no viruses on your pc, and if your fire wall is blocking sending and receiving items.

If all you have if the basic & free Yahoo email, then I don't believe it will work with an email client like Mail in Vista (which is an updated form of Outlook Express for all intents and purposes). Most free email services are purely web-based email services...you generally have to pay to get POP or IMAP access. See this page from Yahoo.

As a side note, I doubt that your ISP is Yahoo. To my knowledge, Yahoo is NOT an ISP (Internet Service Provider). They do "team" with some ISPs to provide the email and other content for the ISP, but the actual Internet connection is generally handled by someone else. An example used to be Yahoo with SBC...but it is now Yahoo with AT&T since AT&T bought out SBC.

Good Call Smax. To my understanding, only Hotmail and GMail provide free POP Forwarding of all emails. Adama, what Smax, and the Yahoo technician said is correct. The only way you can POP Forward your Yahoo email is to get the paid version of Yahoo Mail.

smax013, Hi. You're right, I should've said AT&T Yahoo is my ISP. Sorry. :(

And, thanks for the "page" re Yahoo POP mail. I printed it and I'm gonna study it.

So, what you guys are saying is that if I have Yahoo Mail, I cannot sign up to have another "client" like Windows Mail, to provide email service for me? Well, in my book, that sucks!
I thought it was because when I first got my laptop, I was trying to learn my way around and when I found Windows Mail, I entered that I had IMAP, just because it sounded good........ Oh, well, I guess IMAP stands for I'M A Putz, huh? :p LOL

Hi, mph. Here goes: "New Message. Connecting to IMAP" Then a ! inside a yellow triangle and: "Some errors ocurred while processing the requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more details."

Underneath, a red dot next to: "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems or a long period of inactivity."

Then some specifics: "Subject: Thank you", Account: IMAP, Server: "yahoo.com", Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure (SSL): No: Error Number: 0X800CCC0F."

At the bottom, it shows: "0 of 1 tasks have completed successfully"

This message also triggers a balloon on the bottom right, with an alert from Spy Sweeper, that says: "You have 1 Spy Sweeper alert to review" When I click on the alert it takes me to the Spy Sweeper alert Page.

There I find another message: "E-Mail Attachment Shield Communication Error." "Spy Sweeper was unable to send or receive one or more email messages that it attempted to scan using the E-Mail Attachment Shield. This is usually caused by a firewall configuration setting that prevents Spy Sweeper from communicating to your email server over the required ports.".... And more info than I could write to report to you about.

So, does it looks that it may be a Firewall issue? or Yahoo Mail not supporting another email client, like you and smax say?

Thanks for all your support, guys. :-)

(my Firewall is by Microsoft Defender)

Adama - I don't know if my situation will help in any way or not. I originally had (and still do have as backup) Earthlink dial-up. So Earthlink is my ISP provider for dial-up. However, almost four years ago, in trying to find a way to access my e-mail from other (think work) locations, I signed up for Earthlink's Web-Mail. Now all my mail goes to their server and I access it on-line from any where.

About a year ago, after waiting for DSL to no avail, I installed Hughesnet Satellite internet service. After playing with their e-mail for a while, I decided to stick with my Earthlink account, but now I can access Earthlink's mail both web and POP off the broadband.

Now, about 99% of the time, my mail stays on Earthlink's server until I either decide to delete it, or archive it. To archive it, I move everthing into a holding folder except what I want to archive, and then simply open Outlook Express, and it downloads everything in my inbox on the Earthlink server into my Outlook Express Inbox on my computer. The reason it is still Outlook Express and not Windows Mail, I only use one computer to archive to and it is an XP machine. Once I get that converted over, it will all go into Windows Mail.

One of the reasons I stayed with Earthlink is the superior spam filtering, and another is the fact that it is only $2 a month more than the Hughesnet backup dial-up access. I believe a non-current Earthlink customer can get an Earthlink address for free, whether or not he can get a webmail inbox also I do not know. If you are interested, send me a PM and I will look into it.

I think it is a good system, as I have both Web-mail and POP3 at my discretion. I only use the POP3 aspect for archiveing. I can respond to an email from either source, although usually by the time it is archived, I am past needing to respond. My address book is on Webmail, not POP3, because that is where the majority of my activity is, and I can access it from work or when I am off visiting friends and relatives.

Hi Adama. No, this is strictly a fact that Yahoo will not allow POP Forwarding on free accounts. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done about that except upgrade the Yahoo account or switch to one of the other free accounts, namely Gmail or Hotmail. Since your ISP is AT&T Yahoo, you are limited by the choices you have.

Wow, rgreen4, that's a lot of info to digest! I know one of the contributing editors here at PCW has earthlink, because I signed up to receive his Newsletters (the one who always makes me laugh)... :^0

Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely, absolutely, consider it. Although, I'd hate to get rid of Yahoo... :( oooooh the pain, the pain... woe is moi..... ;-)
