Hi,

We got a brand new pc with Windows Vista Home preinstalled, also a brand new HP 6180 All in One printer. We use Quicken Deluxe for our finances. We use this to print out reports and also print checks, never used to be an issue using an XP PC and a Cannon Printer. Now, however, when we go to print, it does not print anything, i've spent hours on the phone with both HP and Quicken, finally found out we had to use an older HP Deskjet 500c driver for quicken, that worked fine, but only for reports. When we print checks, using the older driver now, it says there is no paper, please load paper, sounds like it is trying to print, but never starts. we've changed paper, tried regular and check paper, uninstalled hp software and reinstalled it, updated to vista compatible driver, even had hp replace the printer 2 seperate times with the same exact results. Any other Apps print just fine. Quicken seems to point to HP, HP points to Quicken, and we of course are in the middle and unable to print checks. What can we do? Very frustrated and not too impressed with either company right now. HP shouldn't have an issue with printing to only 1 app, and quicken the same with 1 brand printer. Any help at all is very much appreciated, run out of ideas here. Here is my email if anyone wants to contact us.

Jason, when I get home I may be able to try a few things for you. I have Vista installed on three machines, an HP desktop, a new HP dv9500t, and a home built desktop. I also have a new HP Photosmart 6180 All-In-One printer. I have not done much with it yet, as I primarily got it to scan with, as my old scanner will not receive drivers for Vista. (Fortunately I still have an XP machine).

A few questions first - Which version of Quicken are you using?

How to you have your 6180 connected - via USB, wired network or wireless?

What printer did you use before, and do you still have it?

Are the Quicken checks a different size than normal 8 1/2 x 11?

Although I have been a Quicken user since 1990, I have never printed checks out of Quicken, and now that I mostly use a free bill-paying service through my bank, I write ever fewer checks. Does Quicken have a way to reprint checks? The reason I am asking, is if you can test print checks on regular paper and then reprint on check paper for example.

Now my 6180 came with three driver discs, Mac, Win2000/XP and Vista. I assume yours did as well.

hey, first, thanks for answering so quickly.

we use quicken deluxe 2007 the latest version we connect via usb cable.

checks are on 8.5 x 11 paper, 3 checks per paper.

we do test by creating a check for 0.00 amount so it won't affect anything, then just delete later. we can test with regular paper that way easier.

the canon printer we had is not vista compatible, so that's why we got the hp 6180 model.

I'm not sure if we got the cd's with the printer, but we did download the latest software from hp's website, so that should be current.

Any help is appreciated, let us know what you find, we're very frustrated here. thanks again.

Jason

Okay, I have Quicken 2008 installed. On my test bed I will install my old Quicken 2006 and play with it.

Installing printers as an older version is a trick I learned from HP when I was having trouble witht he duplexing on an HP Photosmart 8250. They had me install it as a Deskjet 990. It worked and that installation is still on my old XP machine. Interestingly enough I was experimenting on that machine for another respondent who was having trouble with duplexing on the 6180. I had the same symptoms on Vista, but then I tried to install it on XP from the CD (Win2000/XP drivers) and it locked up the machine.

I will get back to you on my results.

Well, I met with total failure to get the 6180 to print checks - as the 6180.
I went through the printer setup - and reports printed beautifully. Now since my 6180 has the automatic duplex adapter (from my Photosmart 8250 which is currently in the closet), I even managed to print the report in duplex mode.

When going through the printer set up, the align function was not working correctly. When I then attempted to print a page of 3 "checks" out of my test file (an old Quicken file copied onto my C: drive, the live Quicken file is on my network drive), I got only the date of the first check (today's date).

I then set up my Laserjet P2015 as the check printer, and all three "checks" printed properly. Falling back on a trick an HP Tech Support person taught me almost two years ago, I installed the AIO again, this time as a Photosmart 8250 using the built in Vista print drivers. Success!

Align functioned properly and all three "checks" printed normally.

By the way, if you do a test print on normal paper, you don't have to delete the checks, I used the same transactions repeatedly by simply deleting the check number by clicking on Print Check when in the date field, and it just entered Print. Then when clicking on Print Checks in the main pull down menu they printed normally.

All of this was done in Quicken 2008. If you have different results in Quicken 2007, come back and I will try it as well in Quicken 2006, although I will have to re-install it first.
