I was talking to a lady at a local diner the other day, who recently upgraded to premium broadband after years of using dial-up. While trying out all of this new speed and bandwidth, she said she downloaded 8 or 10 new release movies over the last several weeks. She has since found out this is a no-no and has stopped, and deleted these movies.
I don't think she was being intentionally shady. She said she was looking for pay-for-view movies to download, and found a site through Google which had links to view or download these movies. There were no disclaimers, login, or registration requirements. It didn't sound like a torrent or other peer-to-peer site. She said that after learning a little more about downloading and privacy, she realized this was not ok.
My question is, realistically, is she already in trouble? Is the FBI, NSA, Homeland Security, and/or Universal Studios security, going to break down her door, or send her a nasty subpoena? Should she retain a good lawyer now, or head for the border? How long do most major ISPs retain log information? She was kind of worried, and if I see her again it would be nice to give her some good news or advice.
