Hi guys, I picked up a new game about a week ago from atari. Bioware was also involved in this. Remember Neverwinter Nights? It came out of some studios called CDPROJEKT in Poland. It is a RPG and IT IS FOR ADULTS. It is called The Witcher and based on some fantasy books that were big in Poland. In this you play Geralt, a witcher who has died and come back. The story is good, and the graphics are almost on a level with Oblivion. A witcher is someone who will take on jobs of killing monsters to earn rewards. It can be extremely challenging at times. Unfortunately, like most PC releases, there are a number of bugs to be worked out. The game experiences freeze ups and the graphics will get all messed up at times. Bioware is using a new engine called aurora 2007. They are currently working on a patch, to be released before Christmas. There is already one patch of 114 Mbs. I'm hopeful that everything will get worked out, as this promises to be a really good RPG entry. Another plus, is that it is non linear. This thing has it all, side quests, a main story line, and action galore. There are many who would like to see this on a console, but at present it doesn't appear likely. It is written for both XP and Vi$ta. There is already a patch out for those running it on a Vi$ta machine, but I forgot exactly what it was for. There is a series of books written by a Polish Author ( think Lord of the Rings only a larger series) and that is where this game comes from. Although it is playable now, it is frustrating at times because of the problems but still fun. Anyone playing Oblivion will like this I think. Also, it says it was "certified" on a Dell XPS 720 system and a M1710 system ( whatever that is). I checked the XPS 720, and it is a pretty high end system. You can elect to use keyboard controls or mouse which is good, as I'm not real big on that WASD stuff. All in all, this has the potential of NWN, and as I remember,NWN ended up with a load of patches before all was said and done. coastie65

Hi gerrawrd, This game looks really good. The problems I was having was due to a poor choice of video card. It will run just fine on The GeForce 6800 GT, 7600 GS, 7800, 7900, 7950, 8600, and 8800. It didn't run well at at on the 8400 GS that I had put in here and probably not on the 8500. I don't know about the ATI Radeons. The game is really good, and there is a fix out to override the censoring ]:) . Some enterprising person came out with that. There were aspects (nudity) that were censored, I guess by Atari. It is pretty challenging even in the "easy" mode. With the 8600 GT that I have in here, the graphics are mind blowing, paticularly the opening movie. I have been this for a while and am really enjoying it. I think I messed up early on and missed some stuff. I didn't take enough time on the side quests and I think I missed getting some items I need. I failed to mention, the opening movie at lest utilizes CGI graphics, or least I think so. I know it is one mind blowing movie to watch and is fairly long. You can hit Esc and skip the movie, but you should watch it once. coastie65

hi coastie!
just watched a couple of screens for "the witcher", the game looks good.
I am looking forward to "far cry 2", will be there in april i think. Graphics will match crysis but far cry is known for amazing AI. And i do like fps .
Have fun playing "the witcher". :-)

Hi piyush, Yeah, Bioware used a new Graphics engine, something called Aurora 2007. It is supposed to bring the graphics to HD capability. That thing has a really long opening movie, that is really fun to watch. although you can skip past it if you want. The opening movie looks to be CGI. I'm not really sure though. I mean the detail is mind blowing. In close ups, you can actually see the pores of the character's skin. coastie65

Hi cosmo, Yeah, I went and read the specs AFTER the fact and realized I had screwed up, so bought the 8600GT. I was so mad I busted the 8400 when I took it out ( Messed up some of the components on the card when I grabbed it to take it out). Oh well, no great loss. The 8600GT is working some kind of good. coastie65

Coastie, the Dell XPS M1710 is a high end laptop system which came out about a year and a half ago. I bought one, and haven't really regretted it. It's a nice system (for a Dell). I'm in the process of replacing my 8 year old Dell Dimension 8100 desktop. We just got a nice bonus check at work, so last week I ordered a Dell XPS 720 H2C with a quad core Extreme CPU, 1 Kilowatt PSU, and dual nVidia 8800 GT video cards... and WinXP Media Edition (not ready to hassle with Vista since many of my programs won't run on it). It's a $3800 system, but with 3 different discounts, I'm getting it for around $3000. I swore I'd never buy another Dell because of their poor support (Dell India), but since I'm going through my companies Dell discount program, it's being bought through Dell's business section, which has much better support than their Home Office section.
I've been looking for a new game to replace Oblivion, which I enjoyed playing very much, although the ending was a bit of an anti climax... well, it doesn't really end, does it? I checked out the site, and ended up ordering a copy this morning. Thanks for pointing me in the general direction. Nice to know it'll work on both of my systems. Cheers

Hi mcb, Oh man, The Witcher is written to both XP DX9 and Vista DX10, and it looks like you are going to be good to go. Don't forget to get the game patches for Vista. I haven't gotten anywhere close to the end of Oblivion as I keep wandering off on side quests. coastie65

Hi Coastie. Didn't mean to be an Oblivion spoiler... Sorry! !http://forums.pcworld.com/legacyimages/
1! I know you've been playing it for quite a while, so I kind of assumed that you had finished it by now.
The DX9 version of The Witcher will be fine for me. Vista is not allowed on my systems.

Hi mcb, I know what you mean. They have a big patch for XP as well, that speeds up the saves and stuff which was pretty annoying. My Nephew plays Oblivion when he comes over and is further along in the main story than I am. He ignores most of the side quests, and there are a ton of them in Oblivion. Don't forget, you've got the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions as well. :^0 coastie65

Hey Coastie, you're into role playing games. There's one which I forgot to mention that you might like called Gothic 2 - Gold Edition. Its about 3 years old now, and the graphics are not quite Oblivion quality (but are pretty good nevertheless). It is BIG, and the gameplay is quite challenging. You can probably pick up a copy from Amazon for about $20. Check it out.
