what is a good cpu temp? right now BIOS says its 43*C right now at idle. also- any tips on setting up dual boot drives?
Your CPU temperature should be fine where it's at currently. Find a temperature monitor and see how higher the system runs when you use it, but I wouldn't expect it to go any higher than 52 *C at the highest.

on the cpu temp, if 60c is normal, then it looks like i installed the cpu cooler correctly if its at 43c.
New issues that i am trying to figure out:
1- when i follow this instructions on the windows super site to do a clean install off of the ultimate upgade disc, i get an error at the end of the upgade install that scraps the entire installation. so im going to try installing the xp pro then upgrading. which brings me to the next issue
2- when i go to install xp, on the screen where you choose your hard drive, it doesnt see all of my hdd. it automatically creats about a 165gb partion on a 500gb hd. so what im going to do is install xp, then run the ultimate upgrade cd so i can eventually activate it as an upgrade. both of the hds are SATA 300, could this be an issue? im hoping that when i go to upgrade to ultimate from xp, i will get the screen where you can add and eliminate partions. that could solve the problems 1 and 2.
3- i checked out that link, but it was only for installing dual boot on one drive. i have a 500gb hd that will house vista, and a 160 gb hd that will house xp for now.
4- i just installed the 160 gb hd, and i can see it in BIOS, but it isnt showing up in my computer on vista. any ideas for that?
im gonna keep tinkering and see what happens
update- i think i solved problem one by doing a clean install by running the update cd from vista. im hoping this shoud allow me to eventually activate ultimate. also, i figured out that xp doesnt have sata drivers, and that i need to save those to floppy from my mother board cd or some other location and install those before i install xp pro. that should fix the rest of the problems.

If you are installing the OS's on separate drives, just do a regular installation. You then select which OS to boot from on the intitial boot screen by selecting F12 to go to the boot menu, and then select which HD to boot from. On mine, they are listed by model which is why I had to use different sizes, as all of my 80Gigs were the same model and I couldn't tell one from the other. One OS has no connection with the other, except to read the discs.
I don't know why the clean install proceedure as set forth in the Supersite article didn't work, it worked on mine when I installed Vista on my HP Media Center.
The problem with XP is not the SATA drives but the particular controller. I had trouble trying to install XP Pro on my Media Center (even though it came with XP MCE) but Vista was no problem. I expected a problem installing XP on my Gigabyte MB in my new build, but not a bobble, it was very smooth. My old HP D530 business class machine with XP Pro came with IDE drives but had early SATA 150 connectors (they don't have the rim around the actual connector) and it recognizes SATA drives with or without the jumper.

yeah when i go to install xp, it reads my first hd, the one i have vista installed on, as an ide drive, but it wont pick up my second drive. the 500gb drive with vista is drive 0, and the 160 that i want to put xp on is drive 1. both are sata II drives, so the problem is that since it is only seeing one drive, the one with vista already installed. ive read that an install cd w/ sp2 on it will recognize the sata II drive (my xp cd isnt even sp1). so here is what i am wondering now-
1- can i call MS and request a new XP pro upgrade cd w/sp2, and deactive my current copy?
2- could i remove my 500 gb hd, so the only drive that xp has a choice to see is the 160gb drive? im thinking remove the 500gb drive, installing xp pro and getting all drivers and updates installed on the 160 drive. then once thats finished, re-install the 500gb drive w/ vista already installed, and im guessing that could work.
im gonna wait for some input for you smart people before i make a move

1. An easy trial would be to remove the 500GB and attempt a straight install on the 160GB, but I am not confident that you will fare better.
2. If you have an IDE drive available, a better option would be to install XP on the IDE drive. They can coexist. The BIOS should let you designate the default boot drive. While normally it is not the best idea to install a HD and optical drive on the same IDE cable, in this situation you don't have much choice as you only have one IDE port.
3. Microsoft does sell disks like you ask - they are called upgrades. However, my experience with installing XP SP2 on a machine with one of the new SATA controllers was not good and this was a machine that came from HP with XP Media Center Edition, and I was attempting to install XP Home SP2. Did you try installing the 680i chipset drivers as a third party driver? After you start the install, a message will come up in the task bar area to hit F8 if you are going to use third party drivers. I have not used them, but another post pointed out that after you hit F8, it will continue copying files and then will later ask you to insert the disk with the third party drivers.
My suggestion is that if the first two options are not sucessful, contact XFX support and see what their suggestions are. Surely, they have a way to install XP on this MB.

i think ive got it figured out- i removed the 500gb drive and installed xp, plugged it back in, and it looks like ive just got to go into BIOS to switch boot drve priority. gonna see if i can activate vista now. . . if that works then im gonna activate xp and get it all up to speed. i think im getting it to where i want it to be :)
update- everything is activated, and im install sp2 now- looks like it will all work, i just have to go into BIOS when i want to change OS. thanks for all of the input so far- i appreciate it! ive still got my vista 64 bit, im thinking it will get installed on another hd sometime in the future. . .

Well, we all learned something from this - at least I have. I have never tried to install Windows (any flavor) on any drive other than drive0, so maybe the lesson is for all of us that Windows wants to be installed on drive0, then once its installed, move it.
As for booting, I would set your default boot in the BIOS setup, but you should be able to access a boot menu by pressing another function key. On my Gigabyte board with the Intel P35 chipset, it's F12. This gives me the option of booting to a wide variety of devices, including CD-ROM, USB, Network, all hard drives with an OS, and others I can't remember right now.
Two things you never forget in computing - your first computer and your first build. Again, congratulations.
