Very strange. Usually with All-In-Ones, its the scanning function that is the hardest to install. A few questions -

1. How old is the printer?

Since the scanner worked to scan an image to the desktop, we can dismiss the possibility of a connection not being correct.

2. Most USB printer from HP require you to install the software before you connect the printer. Was the printer setup in this manner?

3. Was this the test print on which you got the error, or was it in printing from an application?

4. If it was from an application, which application? If no test print was done, please make a test print from the printer folder.

5. When you go into the printer folder, are there any notations beside the printer?

Do you have another HP printer/print driver installed? I believe sometimes you can get conflicts between HP drivers.

Hi in reply to your questions the printer is nearly 4 years old, yes the printer was installed using the software, the printer wont print anything not even the test page, there are no notations in the printer folder. Since my first post i uninstalled and reinstalled the software, the HP Director icons will not open even though the HP Director icons appear on my desktop

Hey gemini1 , go to control panel and click on the printer icon. You should see the the HP printer with a check mark beside it. You may also see something called " Microsoft XPS Document Writer". The XPS thing should not be checked. Although the scanner is part of the same hardware, you'll notice a separate icon in the control panel for scanners & cameras. If you click that you'll see the same printer listed. I have an HP C5180 photosmart all-in-one. As I remember, I hooked up everything then installed the softwear, but then again, this is less than a year old. You might also want to recheck your connections. coastie65

The normal method of installation of these printers is to use the disc, although you can use the add printer function. The disadvantage of doing so, is it will not add the rest of the functions, and it will just function as a printer. However, the other functions are working, so -
1. Go into the printer section of the control panel and attempt to manually add the printer.

If that does not work, delete the printer and try to manually install again.

The printer is 4 years old, the computer has XP MCE which indicates that it is not brand new either, what computer was the printer connected to before and was it working properly?

The scanner/ coppier functions work independent of the computer. You can use those functions with the computer turned off or at least you can with the one I've got as it the printer has it's own little "monitor". Now I'm not sure of your printer, but with this one ( C5180), You install the hardware, then on startup, you will see a message in the system tray " Found New Hardware" . You click on that and the installation wizard will come up. This generally the procedure when you add any new hardware. You can check to see if your software was installed. either pull up the programs listing and see if they are listed or go to control panel, add/remove programs and see if it is listed there. As has been mentioned, in control panel, click on the printer icon, It should show your printer, (HP PSC 1110), There should be a check mark beside it. If not, click on that icon, as I believe a window will open that will allow you to enable the printer. While in control panel you might also want to go to System, Hardware, Device manager, and check to see if the drivers have been installed and are enabled. coastie65

Hi thanks for your reply , your correct my current pc is a reconditioned pc i bought from Dixons (cheaper than buying brand new), the printer was previously connected to my old pc running Windows ME, i have tried to manually install the printer but was asked to select a drive for printer to be installed into, each drive i selected was rejected by the set up wizard, as i have said in earlier posts i am a complete novice when it comes to computers, unless something installs straigh tfrom a cd-rom i am completly lost, dont understand any of the technical jargon. ;

Hi gemini, Ok, I found the setup stuff for my all-in-one. Once you have the printer setup, Ink cartridges installed, paper in tray ect. Do not plug in the usb cable. Start installation of the CD software, it should instruct you to plug in the USB at some point during software installation. Now granted, this is a C5180 and about 7 mos. old so these instructions may not work. Also during installation of the software, there should be a box where you would check, "connect to this computer". I am assuming you have the Installation CD for the printer. If not you can go to HP's site and download the softwear with be will already be updated. coastie65

Have you gone into the control panel and clicked on printers and faxes ? I don't know which OS you are running, I am running XP MCE and when I click on the printers and faxes I get two items, The HP printer ( which is checked and something called Micro$oft XPS document printer which is not checked. Do this after you after you have gone through the set up and see if it recognizes your printer and if so make sure it is checked. coastie65

When making a copy, the printer has no interaction with the computer. It scans and directly prints. Obviously the scanner works and obviously the print engine works. What is not happening is that the PC is not sending a print image to the printer.

This printer I believe connects via a USB cable. It may be the cable and it may be the USB port on the computer. What I find strange is that you do not mention getting an error message which makes me thing that the PC thinks that it is printing.

1. Go into the printer folder and right click on the printer and see what is listed for the printer connection in properties.

2. Have you tried a second cable?

3. Do you have another USB Printer?

4. If you do not have another cable and do not have another printer, see if you can plug the cable into another USB port on the computer. If it is plugged into the back, try a front port, if it is plugged into the front, try a rear port. Let us know the response.

Does that printer work on the same port on the same computer using the same cable?

With the computer off, swap the cable from the HP PS1110 to the second printer. Then turn on the computer and see if it still works correctly. This will eliminate the possibility that the cable or port is to blame.

If it does, it means that the interface on the printer is defective. We know that the printer engine functions since it works as a copier, but not as a printer. When we eliminate the computer, the USB port and cable, then it eliminates all but the one item.
