1. How old is the printer?
Since the scanner worked to scan an image to the desktop, we can dismiss the possibility of a connection not being correct.
2. Most USB printer from HP require you to install the software before you connect the printer. Was the printer setup in this manner?
3. Was this the test print on which you got the error, or was it in printing from an application?
4. If it was from an application, which application? If no test print was done, please make a test print from the printer folder.
5. When you go into the printer folder, are there any notations beside the printer?

1. Go into the printer section of the control panel and attempt to manually add the printer.
If that does not work, delete the printer and try to manually install again.
The printer is 4 years old, the computer has XP MCE which indicates that it is not brand new either, what computer was the printer connected to before and was it working properly?

This printer I believe connects via a USB cable. It may be the cable and it may be the USB port on the computer. What I find strange is that you do not mention getting an error message which makes me thing that the PC thinks that it is printing.
1. Go into the printer folder and right click on the printer and see what is listed for the printer connection in properties.
2. Have you tried a second cable?
3. Do you have another USB Printer?
4. If you do not have another cable and do not have another printer, see if you can plug the cable into another USB port on the computer. If it is plugged into the back, try a front port, if it is plugged into the front, try a rear port. Let us know the response.

If it does, it means that the interface on the printer is defective. We know that the printer engine functions since it works as a copier, but not as a printer. When we eliminate the computer, the USB port and cable, then it eliminates all but the one item.
