I have an HP Pavilion zd8000. The fan runs all the time with a second fan kicking in every minute or so. Is this something to worry about? Is there anything I can do to stop it? A few things that may or may not be related ... my battery is dead, so it's plugged in all the time. I have to use a wireless keyboard because the keyboard on the laptop skips letters, very annoying and a problem that seems to get worse when the laptop has been on a while.

By kicking you mean running right? and you also mean its making this sound? Its good that fans are running to cool down your laptop. Try spraying the laptop with that air compressor and see does that help.

Right, I meant running, and it makes the usual fan sound. I'll try using some air on it. Thanks.

CPU usage seems normal depending on what I'm doing, it varies from 1% to 20%, I've seen it jump up to 40%. The processes are 58, that seems high, but I'm not entiredly sure how to lower that.

Hi Stewcomm and welcome to PCWorld. :-)

Okay, let's try to narrow this down a bit.

- What are your system specifications? ...on the bottom of your laptop, you should see the exact model number of your laptop. The number you provided is the series number, not the model number.

- Do you use your computer on a desk or on a soft surface like a bed or the carpet?

- How long has this been happening?

- What applications were installed during the same time this started to happen?

- What security applications do you have and what were the results or your latest scan(s)?

- What is your nominal CPU Usage?
