Funny you must be a beginner. You want everything made easy without having to actually compute or know what's going on in the background. Keep your Vista pal. You aren't man enough for Linux. ]:)

It lets you run most older windoze programs and apps on Linux, older games, etc. There are also 2 others that let you do this, but they aren't free like wine. (parallels, and one other I can't seem to remember. Parallels lets you have multiple operating systems on a single PC(e.g. Linux XP, Mac OS X Vista, et al)

Thanks for info.
Then Linux cant run Quake 4, Windows Media Encoder, or Windows Movie Maker 2.
Therefore Linux is not for me.

SHAME on you, Jacobi. How much does Jobs pay you for a stint like this? Your article is utter rubbish. And shame on PC World for allowing it to pass editorial muster.

And I agree with others here who are just as tired of the irrelevant, irresponsible and IRRATIONAL rants of the far, far left wing of Mac users. There is nothing wrong with dissent and debate, but there are rules, not the least of which are honesty and facts.

I have given up on all Microsoft operating systems. Ubuntu is more stable and a better OS. I don't understand why anyone would want to support the "Evil Empire" when they can get an excellent OS for free.

They are different operating systems. Windows can't run everything a Mac can, or Linux and any combination of the three.

Yup, my point exactly....
That's why I only run the best one, which for my needs, is currently XP home.

Taking a pot shot are we? Fine. I read two books on Linux, researched all the types of Linux, and throughly examined extras like Beryl. Is that expert enough for you? I knew what I was getting into, were you so prepared when you first started Linux? I doubt it. By the way Nancy, insulting my manhood is real mature.

Why get Wine when you can just use Windows to play it without all the hassle?

I have done my homework too, if all I wanted was web and some other basics then Linux would be better than XP for me.
BUT I need so much more.

I also just got a new machine w/ Vista, and all my experience using, troubleshooting and supporting Vista machines made me wipe the drive before its first boot and install Kubuntu 7.10. -Not because I believe Micro$oft is evil, but because they've made a crappy product. (Please don't pretend you're surprised, they have done it before.)
Inside four hours, I had my old XP license running as a virtual drive for those two applications I still occasionally use Windows for.
If your defining use for Windows is a game, you've just turned a tool into a toy. You can't (and shouldn't) play with tools; you could hurt yourself. Go ahead and keep dumping your money into Vista.

To all of those who think Linux isn't as good as Windows, my advice to them is: If you want to play games buy a gaming system. (Windows never did a good job of playing games anyway). if you want a program that is functionally similar to a Windows application try looking at what Linux has to offer. Everything I did in Windows I can do in Linux. Take a look at http://wiki.linuxque....org/wiki/LinuxsoftwareequivalenttoWindows_software
for Linux software that is equivalent to Windows.

'T'was the night before christmas in the back of my house
my machine was not working, not even the mouse;
The computer had hung, I cried out with dispair,
"Why, why windows? Who the (censored) put it there?"

The screen was all frozen, the ping response dead,
Died once again? Something had to be said,
"They still haven't fixed this? I should give Bill a slap,
I've lost all my work, I'm (censored) sick of this crap!"

Restarting the machine, it refused to come up,
Non-System disk or disk error, this really does suck.
I grabbed my boot floppy, stuck it in with a rattle,
I'll yet fix this thing, though it may be a battle.

Up came my prompt, see-colon-back-slash,
fdisk /mbr, struck enter with a bash.
whir-whir-whir done, I hope this is it,
This inferior software has given me the (censored).

I reset the sick beast, waited for it to boot,
Windows splash screen came up, then the desktop with a toot.
Illegal operation, this program will shut down,
"Mother @#%king @&@#( @#&*", the computer powered down.

Oh dear oh dear me, what am I to do?
From the corner of my eye I catch sigh of GNU.
Well what have we here? A free o/s et al?
"Hmmm," I think, "I'll give it a go."

And so on an impulse I take up the dare,
With an optimistic feeling I load this Slackware.
From fdisk to setup to install to reboot,
I quiver from excitement and nervousness too.

It looks like it's done and has finished its reboot,
What do I do now, and what the (censored) is this 'root'?
I spy on the shelf a helpful little gem,
I grab 'Slack for beginners' and rtfm.

Tentatively but deftly I tap out commands,
Satisfied that it works I denounce microsoft's plan,
"You'll never prevail so long as I am around!,
You, Mr Gates, are nought but a clown!".

Through study and trial, error and progress,
I make use of what at first seems such a mess.
I work hard and learn how it all fits together,
I'm no longer led at the end of my tether!

"Now, Emacs! now, X and Blackbox!
On, Eterm! on, Star Office! on, Gimp and Netscape!
All hail Linus Torvalds! All hail Larry Wall!
Stop what you're doing, just go and install!"

Never a bigger evangeliser have you seen,
Than the form of myself when I let out this scream,
"Don't use that nasty, proprietary mess,
it's not yet too late to install Linux tonight!"

And so with this tale my experiences I recount,
I hope from his story you learn something profound,
In Redmond you will find only trouble and dispair,
The true answer lies in Open Source Software!

I enjoyed the article and agree there are many problems for some users and for some they got it all straitened out. Some of those comments by some of the users sound like a lot of people drawing lines in the sand like little children and anyone on the other side is an idiot. I just feel that a system should work out the box and I shouldn't have to fix it. For those that had no problem, they should thank their Higher Power, (Microsoft, Ubuntu, Mac or maybe God.)
