Uh, yeah... hmmm... well, I certainly hope you cut-and-pasted this, because - with all due respect - I doubt anyone will read beyond the first or maybe second paragraph, as I am certain they did NOT the first it made the rounds, what, ten years ago now, or thereabouts? It wasn't funny then, and it isn't funny now, but in the spirit of Christmas and such, I suppose we ought to say something nice like, "it gets an "A" for effort."

Okay everyone. Let's not make this more of an issue than it is. LinuxFiend, CheddarHead's comment was in jest, I believe. I do not believe he or she meant anything negative against you or your post. I personally thought it was funny, a bit long, but funny nonetheless.

Please do not resort to personal attacks. Your post has been removed for such an attack. If you have any questions as to why your post was removed, please read the Community Standards or send any of the Moderators a message.

Ok seriously, all this windows vista bashing needs to stop. First off, lets get one thing straight: Microsoft is the standard for operating system software worldwide. Period. It wouldnt be where it is now if all they did was put out crappy products. When xp first came out, it wasnt perfect, and service pack 2 definitely had its flaws. Windows vista is not a bad operating system at all. Ill admit, i was frustrate beyond belief when i upgraded my machine by doing a regular install( keeping my old xp files). Vista sucks when you do this. But when I went back and did a clean install, I have had no problems whatsoever on my year old dell 1501. It runs lights out fast and works with all my hardware. Im tired of peoplecomplaining about vista and how much it sucks compared to leoptard. XP was good, and so is vista. its not better than xp yet, but for crying out loud people, at least wait until SP1.

I said all i'm gonna say here. I respect everyone's oppinion here, however aren't you Windows users just the least bit curious if there is something better out there. Besides, Linux is free and comes with all you need.

I prefer to play my games on PC. Why is it the Linux devotees spend so much time here? I didn't care for Ubuntu but you don't see me flaming on thier boards.

It is really werid that people try to upgrade and then downgrade it, back to XP because Windows Vista is a step higher than the rest, Here's an idea buy a Computer that is meant for Windows Vista instead of upgrading your Windows 98!

You make a good point. I as well respect everyones opinion. I have not had the opportunity to experience linux, but why would I when i have a perfectly good machine capable of running vista, not to mention running it fast. Im also pretty obsessive about my privacy and security and when it comes to freebase software, you never truly know what your getting yourself into.

well, well well! I have no problem dual booting Xp and Vista. So I rarely do I only do it occasionally to run Quicken Xg 2005 in Xp becuase it is the only program for me that sometimes crashes in Vista. At least I don't have to reboot when it does. As for some old program like games and Lotus suite I use Microsft Virtual Machine with Windows 98e running. Now I dont't have to converte those hundreds of spreadsheets of mine. What a joy.
Sure there are some quirks with Vista but I left linux because it had some too! Going back to XP is not for me. I would almost think that before you know it you will come back to Vista too!! Or perhaps you might try an Apple.

I have Vista on both my desktop and my laptop. I have to say that it is better than XP if you are running good hardware and software. That said, if you have a 3 or a 4 year old computer, then why would you even waste your time trying to run it, it probably doesn't meet the minimum requirements anyway. All of my software works just fine. I have had no problem with any of my hardware either, but I only have really good hardware running in my computer anyway. If you have mediocre hardware you can't expect it to run great anyway. The people that bash it either really don't have the computer power to run it, or the moment that the slightest problem occurs they start bashing it. Remember XP still has its own problems. Maybe when Linux becomes even easier to use for the regular user then it will become the standard operating system of choice.

yea absolutely. The kind of people who complain about vista are the ones who dont have the equipment to use it. People dont like that you have to upgrade you system in order to upgrade to vista. well i have one thing to say about that: vista is the future people. This is the scope of technology now. Its fast, rapidly growing and showing now signs of slowing down, so if you plan on keeping with the pace, you gotta get with the program. If you have problems with vista, chances are, the problem is you. If you want to stay on xp forever, be my guest. Or hey heres an idea, go buy a mac. Not that i'd recommend it.

Thanks, MPH, for your kind words.

Yes, of course I was jesting. But - sadly - there are a LOT of overly sensitive (and sometimes irrational and angry ) people out there on the far, far left of the Mac/Linux/Ubuntu world, which, from the standpoint of personal computing, is a world the vast majority of us don't inhabit.

Happy Holidays to everyone in this discussion!

Well to clarify for you there jb5134, my machine doesn't lack in the equipment area. Asus MN232-SLI mobo, 4gigs dc ddr2, dual 8800GTS geforce cards, and 7.1 soundblaster. So I think I have enough to power Vista the world over. However, Vista is such a resource hog for the lame excuse of a GUI it has. Compiz-Fusion blows Vista out of the water in graphics capability and does it with half 1/4 the resources Vista requires. Oh and did I mention Compiz-Fusion comes bundled with Ubuntu 7.10 free. Yes thats right, I said free. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=_ImW0-MgR8I So check out the proof if you like. The day Vista has something like that, it would cost over a million dollars for that distro.

That's my story and i'm sticking to it.

Users saying "well if you want to play games then get a gaming machine" with their noses turned up obviously have no clue of the finer points of PC vs console gaming. Aside from that, though, I also use my laptop as a media center and a workstation. No other OS does things better than Windows in this respect, so I'm perfectly happy where I am.

As for Vista, it may not be perfect as it is now, but I have no qualms with upgrading after MS irons out the bugs and their OS is once again the best on the market.

Ditto here too. Microsoft underestimated how much time people are willing to give using a new operating system interface? 64bit version was nice, except drivers are missing yet. Maybe next year will give it a spin. You just can't expect people to relearn Microsoft Visual Studio (what driver developers probably use) to be on the same target dates that the product is released? Microsoft should be happy with its licensing fees, not new audio formats? Where would Microsoft be without audiophiles?

I did exactly the same thing, with a twist. After building a new computer with 2 times the speed of my XP machine, I loaded Vista. This allowed me to run things at about 1/2 to 1/3 the speed of XP - with lots of interruptions. I have now gone back to XP - and am also using "Gutsy Gibbon" (Ubuntu) as the new generation OS. Ubuntu is way beyond Vista in my view and a Five-Star Operating System (PS - I am a Windows guy since day 1). I believe a paradigm shift has begun.
Holy cow.

Users who say "No other OS does things better than Windows in this respect" obviously haven't seen or used Mythtv. http://mythtv.org/mo...me=MythFeatures Windows media center is as big a joke as vista is...

I am in agreement with tonyatn. I have been using computers since 1980. As a hobby, I have been repairing and troubleshooting computer problems since 1988. I assemble all of my computers, personally. I have never purchased a pre-built machine except for clients.

I usually buy a copy of each of Microsoft's OS's including Windows ME. I didn't upgrade to XP until the first service pack came out. I was considering upgrading to Vista once the first SP comes out but I am actually still happy with XP. At the moment, I don't have any clients who have Vista nor do they have computers powerful enough to run Vista in it's BEST form. I do have a computer powerful enough to run Vista Ultimate but just see no need to upgrade at this point. As a side note, I am still running IE6, because IE7 "broke" some programs that I still use and I don't like the newer versions of said programs. I am using all of the upgraded WinXP components on my laptop, though.

I personally think MS rushed Vista to market. Another article about MS pushing the security features of Vista may be the problem. With all due respect to MS, they have never been able to get a secure OS to market. With that said, I know that the OS's were never intended to be used on wide spread networks. And my philosophy has always been, "What man can create, man can destroy." Just look at DRM. Whenever a new type of DRM is released, sooner or later someone comes up with a workaround. DRM IMO only hurts the honest user.

Additionally, I have been extremely disappointed with the move towards a more "Apple" type of interface. If I wanted an Apple, I would have purchased an Apple. Used to be when something went wrong, one could boot into DOS, fix the problem by adjusting .INI files and be back up and running. Now I have had to learn how to mess with the registry which isn't always the easiest thing to do.

That link was very nice, but you seem to have missed the rest of my post in relation to my comment. I don't watch TV on my notebook. I have a TV for that (although I'll keep that link in mind if I ever need to use my tuner). If I need to watch movies or videos I use VLC media player, and for music I use Windows Media Player for its ease of use and occasionally WinAmp for it's EQ abilities.
