Hello;

I am usng Windows XP home on a 2 Ghz machine with 2Gb of memory and 68 Gb of free hard disk space. I am also running BitDefender Antivirus 2008 sofware.

Recently an issue has started where sometimes when I try to start a program the Windows hour glass appears for a couple of seconds the the program never starts. Also sometimes when I try to delete a file I get a Windows message "Error Deleting File of Folder Cannot delete "filename"; Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected ..."

When these two issues happen I reboot my machine and the problem is fixed - I can start the program that wouldn't start and I can delete the file that wouldn't delete.

I have checked for hard disk errors (none), the machine is virus free and the hard drive is degraged regularly.

I have not changed hardware or installed any new programs prior to this issue.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is? Thanks very much for your help!

Essentially, the access denied or write-protected message is indicating you are trying to delete a FILE that is already being used by a program IN Windows at the time you are trying to delete whatever file is launching this alert. What files are you trying to delete exactly?

Hi Artman. I have some questions for you:

- Can you list which applications do not open?

- Do you have the latest version of the indicated applications?

- How long has this been occurring?

- Do you get the same result if you try to open the indicated applications within Safe Mode? (If you are not sure how to get into Safe Mode, please follow the steps listed within this Document.

- What security applications do you have and what were the results of the latest scan(s)?

As Techie stated, this is a relatively basic, and common, message. Basically, one or more applications are using the file that you are trying to delete. This will also happen if you are trying to move or rename a file that is in use.

The most common would be if you are listening to a music file and decide you do not like it. You stop the file and proceed to try to delete the file when this message comes up. The easiest way to resolve this situation is to close whatever application used that file and, presto, you will be able to do whatever it is you tried to do originally.

Now, if you notice this more frequently, make sure you have the latest version of whatever application you have to continuously close to perform that action.

Adobe Bride (used with PhotoShop) sometimes does not open when clicked on. No I have not tried opening in Safe Mode - never thought of that. I am using the latest version and update of Bridge.

Only security program I am using is BitDefender 2008 antivirus. I scan every 3 days - no virus or spyware - machine is clean.

This started happening about a month ago.

Also when I have trouble deleting a file and it won't delete and I get the error mentioned in my first post, I do close all of the applications and I still get the message. I either have to reboot or go into Safe mode in order to delete the file. This file deletion issue doesn't happen each time only some of the time.

I just ran sfc /scannow and some Windows files were copied back onto the system from the XP disk. Maybe that will fix the problem.

Thanks for your help - any other ideas would be appreciated.

Could you list the programs you have running in the background during regular Windows use? Possibly you have too many things running that are consuming your system's resources whenever you attempt to open applications.

You mentioned you only have AntiVirus software installed. If this is correct, you may have a spyware infestation that your AntiVirus software isn't picking up? Are you running a Firewall?

As MPHe stated, you should try opening applications in Safemode to see if there is an effect.

Hi Bill :

As Others have mentioned, IF BitDefender antiVIRUS is your ONLY security program, you have

inadequate security. As a Minimum you should install the FREE Version of "SUPERAntiSpyware".

As to the problem you initially mentioned, you should seriously consider installing the FREE

"Unlocker", available from http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker . While there, read carefully the Info

about "Unlocker Explorer" and "Unlocker Assistant" .
