Is there a way to remove duplicate pictures from a folder ? I have about 5000 pictures with different names but about 40% of them are duplicated. Is there a software that sees the identical picture (not just the name, but like a finger reader) and eliminate the duplicates ?

Hi Navgroup and welcome to PCWorld. :-)

First, since your question is in relation to deleting duplicate pictures from your computer (I presume) and not about a particular camera, I have moved this Discussion from the Digital Cameras & Camcorders Community into the Answer Line Community.

Now, you really do not need a specific application to perform the task you want:

- Open Windows Explorer (Right Click on My Computer and click on Open )

- Navigate to the folder where all of your pictures are store and open that folder

- Click on View and select Thumbnail

This will give you an image of each picture within that folder. Since you are looking for duplicates, once you find a duplicate, just delete it. It will take some manual deletion on your part but I believe this option is fine. Other than that, I am not sure there is an application available that will automatically show duplicate pictures.

I understand that you can view it using thumbnails all the duplicate documents but i don't want to go about deleting 2000 pictures manually. I was wondering if there is a software out there which could detect same pictures and eliminate the duplicates.

See, that may be a very difficult task. I may be thinking about this too broadly but that application would have to scan each picture, store that image, and compare it against every other image it finds. I know technology advances everyday but I am not sure that something of this nature is available. If it is, I highly doubt the use of the application, potentially once, will justify the cost (seemingly very high).

I wish I could be of more help. I will keep an eye on this Discussion and hopefully we will both learn something new.

Well, thank Google for this one.....

I did a quick search on "Delete Duplicate Pictures" and came up with three applications that may work for you:

NoClone

Duplicate Finder

Duplicate Image, Photo, Picture Find & Remove Software

I believe NoClone is free. Duplicate Finder and Duplicate Image, Photo, Picture Find & Remove costs. Please try them out and post if any of these three work for you.

The last time I looked into duplicate file finders (admittedly, nearly two years ago), I was impressed by Big Bang Enterprises' DoubleKiller (go to http://www.pcworld.c...,2/article.html and scroll down to "Remove Duplicate Files" for details). If you use this program, search for jpgs, and set it to do a CRC check before declaring two files duplicates, I think you can safely assume that they are truly duplicate photos.

Of course, things are more complicated if you have a loose definition of "duplicate." I you've fixed red-eye in a photo, or resized it, and saved it under a different name, it isn't technically a duplicate (and what I described wouldn't find it). That would make it a lot tougher to find.

So far the Duplicate File Finder has worked great for me! It has been a terrific assistance for me in eliminating duplicate images and songs from my hard drives - saving me loads of time.

Thank you mphenterprises for helpings us.

Ps: the free version of Noclone is worthless atleast for me.
