Hello

I am looking to secure my Dell Inspiron laptop with security software. What would be the best software to prevent malware, spyware etc??

Personally, I have always liked and used ZoneAlarm for a firewall. I use the "Pro" version (i.e. I pay for it) as there are some features in the paid for version that I like to have, but they have a free version that is darn good. Some people like Comodo Free Firewall, I believe.

For anti-virus, I have been using the free version of Avast recently, but many will recommend AVG Free as well.

For anti-spyware, a lot of people recommend SuperAntiSpyware and I believe AVG Anti-Spyware as good choices.

I am sure that others will chime in to correct or add to what I have offered.

:D Hi :

The "Best" security depends on the SPECIFIC Name of your Operating System, which you have

NEVER told us, even in the other thread !? SPECIFIC as to IF Win XP SP1 or Win XP SP2 !?

Would definitely AVOID the Spyware Doctor you mentioned you had in the other Thread . Generally

speaking, should follow the Advice in the "Document" for this Forum that I created located at

forums.pcworld.com/docs/DOC-1141|d-1141 . Is this laptop a different computer from the One with

the recent Control Panel problems ?

:D Hi :
Your new computer has a Windows VISTA Home Premium Operating System . The Main "change"

from my Recommendations in the Document I mentioned in my previous Post concerns firewalls .

First I will assume your Vista Home premium OS is a 32-bit OS !? I have heard that your "built-In" OS
firewall still is not top-notch when it comes to "Outbound" Protection; also I have heard it is a "Rules" type

of firewall, means it gets better the more "Rules" that are "created" . Most people, including me, prefer an

"Application" type firewall, which is easier to manage . So I make the following 2 recommendations,

based on WHICH "type" you may prefer .

1) For an "Application" - type Vista firewall, I recommend "PC Tools Firewall Plus", available at

pctools.com/firewall . This is the ONLY PC Tools product I recommend; it has an established

track record in firewall protection for a Vista 32-bit OS; the other companies are doing "catch-up" .

IF you install this "type", you have to "disable" your "built-in" Vista OS One .

2) For a "Rules" - type firewall : to essentially strengthen your "Built-In" OS firewall, consider

"Vista Firewall Control" . For info on this, I refer you to a thread on the Avast Antivirus Support Forums

at [http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30234.0] .

The Other Main Concern is that new computers usually come with pre-installed antivirus programs,

usually either Norton or McAfee , and it is recommended NOT to use either. However, to

COMPLETELY REMOVE them requires "uninstalling" them from your "Programs and Features"

section of your computer AND using THEIR "Removal Tool" . IF you tell me WHICH One you have,

I will provide a link to the its "Removal Tool" .
