Hey MPH! Well AVG updated this morning and no prompts to restart. My firewall is from McAfee(stand alone) and I cannot see any problems with this config. but, now that you mention it I will check on their site to see if anything came up this week or last.

Thank you, Flashorn. :-) I am very proud of my new system and plan to take very good care of it. :D
Anyway, just an update for all. I disabled Zone Alarm and I still was notified that I had to restart, so, I restarted the computer and I uninstalled previous AVG I had and installed a fresh version downloaded directly from Grisoft. I will keep everyone informed of what happens overnight tonight.

Hey MPH! Well AVG updated again this afternoon at about 3 PM and no restart required. Did check on McAfee site and absolutely no mention of any interference with firewall. I presume this is on your new PC. Is there something you added or did differently than your last set up. Maybe a new detection app. or spyware with real time tracking. Worst case, try another firewall or maybe Avast instead AVG. I know it's a pain but, how else are you going to find out. Just hope the fresh install works. Talk to you again.

Hi Flash. No, nothing new. I really did not have to do anything different. To be on the safe side, I did do a complete reinstallation of Windows XP before I loaded Windows Vista but other than that, I did not change any applications from what I had in my previous build. I will keep you all posted as to what happens tonight.

I also had the same problem...all of a sudden about 3 weeks ago AVG was requireing a restart EVERY DAY. I have it setup to automatically check for updates everyday at 2am, and every afternoon when I'd go to use the pc again it said it needed a restart. What I did to fix mine was just change the settings. (I don't know HOW they got changed in the first place, i'm the only one using this pc and i DIDN'T change it, but whatever!) Open up the Control Center, then double click on Update Manager...that'll bring up the settings for update manager...make sure the box is checked for "Update Immediately" and I'd recommend that you choose "Require confirmation from the user" box beneath that - but you can choose whatever you wish here.
Let me know if that doesn't fix it, but it's easier then re-installing and it fixed mine as well as several other people's that I know. It seems perhaps the settings may just have gotten changed by an update - but I can't confirm that. ???

You wanna know what I find really refreshing? That even the mphenter himself has to come in and ask for feedback from the forum, even if it's once in a blue moon!

I had this same issue with my AVG.............. That's been a few months ago. The uninstall / re-install also fixed mine. I dont remember how my settings were set at the time, but they are as described above now ( they already were when I just checked ) It definetly sounds like it was something to do with one of AVG's apdate packages......... I had not been here for a while when it happened, but it's interesting to see that other people had the same issues. Here's one weird thing, out of 4 computers here, it only happened to one, and it's the one i'm always messing with / trying things on. I figured I had created my own prob.
