Vista is terrible

I just got vista at my school. At startup they load a couple of school related programs and the memory usage said .99 gb. And i swear to god my celeron 1.5ghz 512 mb ram machine with xp will beat a vista machine with a core 2 duo and 2 gb of ram. Its actually very close. Also there have already been 3 crashes in my school. The xp machines almost never have.

When I installed XP for the first time few years back on my p3, which had 64 mb of RAM at that time, my system used to hang at startup 4 out of 5 times .Now if at that time i would have said that XP is terrible , then i would have ended up using M.E. till now. But i didnt i put on 265 mb and xp was fine.
And also my ram usage at startup is around 600mb , with the resource hungry mcafee suite and other applications and graphical UI options of vista enabled. It depends on how a system is managed. Comparing with school systems which will have so many startup entries which are of no use isnt fine.
This thread could end up in another hot xp vs vista debate. :-)

Hey, Adama - I must agree that Vista is horriible because I'm about to take this lemon back to Best Buy. I just uninstalled HP's Smart Center and am waiting to see how this PC acts now. Time will tell.
Do you or does anyone know how to swap Windows Vista for Linux or Mozilla? How would I get that installed on this HP PC?

Assuming you don't want to save you
Vista install, just download whatever distro you want, I recommend
Ubuntu , Kubuntu
, or Xubuntu , or if you on low
speed internet order a free DVD or CD, then set your BIOS to boot
from your CD/DVD drive, then boot from the CD/DVD, the Linux desktop
will load, then click the install icon then just follow the install
instructions. You shouldn't have any problems with it. If you'd like
to see a video, here's
a video of a Kubuntu install.

I don't know what else to tell you, but perhaps Smart Center is supposed to come up every time you boot up your computer... ?

I happen to love Vista, it's always worked well for me, but I do realize everybody has their own opinion.
So, if you're tired of Vista I would suggest downloading Moxilla Firefox. A lot, make that a HUGE LOT, of people on these forums use it and really like it. I trust TechyGuy's opinion, he had this to say about it on another thread:
Ooops, sorry :( my Snip didn't work out so well, but here's the link mozilla.com/ to Mozilla Firefox. You can check it out, their Website is beautiful and the information is easy to read and follow. This way you can research it and make an informed decison on your own.
Another person who likes Mozilla Firefox is techie4fun, I trust his opinion as well. He can also give you good advise and tips for Firefox.
ps: I guess you didn't receive my PMs - Private Messages? (under "Your Stuff")
UPDATE: Here's the link to that discussion [http://forums.pcworld.com/message/78846#78846|m-78846]

Susan, since my Snip didn't work out too well, I went back to the thread and I was able to copy TechyGuy's comment, for you. Here it is:

[8.|m-78845] in response to: [Adama|m-78845] Adama, I highly reccomend getting Mozilla Firefox. It is faster(by far), as well as more secure and reliable, then Internet Explorer. Its features far outnumber IE, especially if you install add-ons(optional features available for download; you can even download an IE7 background). It is free, and you can still use IE once Firefox is installed. And, did I mention that it is, by my calculations, at least twice as fast as IE as far as load-times here in the forums? And by the way, the game of questions loads pretty fast on Firefox

Susan - be careful. Your machine has a lot of custom hardware features that came along after Vista was released. Research on the HP website about wether driver for those features even exist for XP.
As for going with another OS (ie: any Linux derivative) there are posting on the Linux Forums that wireless support in Linux is spotty with Linksys wireless chips and non-existant with Broadcom chips. Thus if your HP machine has Broadcom wireless chips, you will have to find an alternative to connecting with your network, and if it has Linksys chips, you may still have to find alternative ways to connect.
I know you have had problems with your machine, but your husband's identical machine (also with Vista) has not given the problems. Keep in mind, you do not have a standard edition of Vista, but one modified by HP with the Smart Center. Since you have uninstalled that, I would wait to see how the machine responds over the next few days.
I'm sorry that I don't have a better answer for you, but other than seeing one on display at Best Buy, I have had absolutely no experience with that type of machine. The touch screen is something else that may have driver issues.
The HP website lists no OS other than Vista for that machine, but does list a BIOS upgrade dated 10-2007. Are your machines older than this? You may need to research the BIOS upgrade.

I agree with you, rgreen, it's a touchy situation Susan finds herself in. I hope that uninstalling the Smart Center will work for her.

Hi Rgreen ~ VISTA is STILL HORRIBLE. I did a total recovery on Sunday, December 23, 2007, and had to use my husband's recovery discs because Best Buy never gave me any when they installed the new hard drive on my PC. I uninstalled the HP Smart Center on Sunday as well after the recovery. Now, remember the recovery was done with Bob's recovery discs for his PC and I used his on mine. After the recovery, the HP Smart Center popped up again, which leads me to believe there was some Windows Vista setting for that to keep coming up all the time. Well, it's gone now and the only other program that might come up is the Windows Media Center which is the same as the Smart Center. So far though, that has not come up and it's now 2 days after the recovery. I mention that there must be some setting with Windows Vista which kept bringing up that Smart Center because my husband's duplicate PC never had a problem with that.
The same ongoing problem exists with me shutting down at night only to come to my PC in the a.m. and find that it booted up itself in the middle of the night. This scares me because we can get severe lightning storms in Florida and one could strike our house and ruin my PC because it was on. DOES ANYONE HAVE A SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM? PLEASE HELP!!!! I do not like having it booting up by itself and there must be some setting I can change somewhere.
THANKS for ANY help you can give me.
