I just purchased an Atak MP65 mp3 player and plug it into my computer but, it's not working. I went into the Device Manger and under the usb port it reads Unknown. The mp3 also comes up no driver installed. What do I do? Thank You

Hi Tenecia and welcome to PCWorld. :-)

Did your mp3 player come with a software CD? If it did, please install that CD to install any necessary drivers. If it did not, make sure you are connected to the internet, Right Click on the mp3 player under Device Manager, and select Update Driver. Windows will search for applicable drivers for this device. I did a quick Google search to find the manufacturer, Atak, but there were only six listings including your Discussion.

I did install the cd software already and that did not work. I tried updateinng the driver with the internet on and after searching my computer. I get a message that the driver I have on my computer is current. I still don't understand why it not detecting my device. Can you think of any thing else or should return this mp3.

Okay, from the content of your posts, I would gather that you connected the device before installed the software and drivers. Is that correct? The vast majority of USB device ask that the user installs the drivers first and then connects the device.

The first thing I can suggest is to try and connect this device to another computer. Remember, install the software and drivers first and then connect the device. If the device works, you know there is something amiss with your computer. If it does not, then you know the device is faulty and needs to be replaced.

If you find that the device works with another computer, a System Restore on your computer may help your situation. For your reference, a System Restore will not remove your files or personal data. Newly installed applications will have to be reinstalled and system settings will have to be reset.

If you are not sure how to get into System Restore, click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

Yes I tried all of this prior to asking for help. I'm just going to return it and try a different mp3 player. Thanks so much for your help.:D

My pleasure. The fact that the manufacturer doesn't even have a website tells a lot. If you can, I would advise going with one of the majors like Microsoft, Apple, or Creative. Good luck and if you need anything else, please post.
