Althoufh my System Restore shows several restart points, when I run it, I get the "system could not be restored: message. I restarted in safe mode and only today shows as an available restore point. I check and the restore is not turned off and says it is monitoring; any ideas would be appreciated.

:D Hi :
This MAY be "related" to your other "Topic" about "Deleted Items" !? When requesting Help, it is wise
to mention the SPECIFIC Name of your Operating System, which you have NOT done in either
"Topic" !? Have you experienced any recent bouts with "Malware" ( "trojans, worms, etc ) ? If yes,
provide as many SPECIFICS as possible; include the Name(s) of your Security program(s) .

Hi lobtuf, If you are using XP and you are receiving automatic updates from Micro$oft, it will mess up System restore. I have encountered the same thing and found out that was the reason. To my knowledge no fix has been issued. The only way around this to turn off automatic updates and go to the site and update. coastie65

You're Welcome. A lot of folks are unaware of this. My sister had the same thing, I told her but, like me, she probably still has Auto updates turned on. I guess I ought to take my own advice, but I get lazy when it comes to the update thing sometimes. :D coastie65

Hi Coastie and LOBTUF. If I may add my two cents. Coastie is absolutely right, certain Windows Updates cause Windows to "hiccup" and one of the issues is the lose of System Restore. Temporarily disabling Windows Updates will correct the problem; however, I do not think it is a good idea to turn Windows Update off completely.
I recently had a client that ran into the same problem. No matter what System Restore point he chose, the process failed. Here is the steps I took to resolve his situation:
- Shut off System Restore on all drives
- Shut off Windows Update
- Restart Computer
- Immediately reinstate Windows Update; but instead, select "Notify but do not download or install Updates"
- Reinstate System Restore on all drives
I cannot guarantee that this will work for you but it has worked. Disabling Windows Update completely puts all efforts on your shoulder to remember to go to the Download page to get the latest updates. As long as you get notified, you will not have to remember on your own.

Hey MPH! If I may, remember when I had the same issue not to long ago, I resolved the problem using the "dial-a-fix" program from "djlizard" . It will do exactly what you have mentioned with ought having to restart tour PC. I still use this program to empty/flush the Software Distribution folder as well as the System 32 / Catroot2 folder. It is absolutely safe and no harm comes to your PC. I usually do this every month .djlizard.net/ You can read about dj lizard at the address afformentioned and read about dial-a-fix at this address, [http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix] , .

Hi mph, That's why I said I still had my autoupdate turned on, I'm too lazy to go get em. :^0 I just try to keep up with my housekeeping and hope I don't need to do a restore. I do occasionally back up files before doing something, particularly in the registry. coastie65

Hey lobuf! My suggestion to you is, to check out the links I provided. In short, what this little program does is, "stops and restarts" your auto updates services, "stops and restarts" your restore services and also if you check the appropriate boxes , reregisters the dll's associated with those services. It would also "clean out" the residue left behind by installation of those updates. Also has other functions such as verifying that your policies are not so restrictive that you are locked out of you administrative rights. To answer your question , YES you can leave your Auto Updates turned on" BUT" choose the " Download and Notify Me" radio button. This way you will be able to see when they (MS) are trying to install new updates. Also IF you choose to install the new updates , click on the Advance radio button, this will show you exactly WHAT they(MS) want to install. Now for more explanation on this little app. please click on the links I provided and read about what other people using this program have to say about it and also WHY they are using it. Do a little bit of homework to better understand and prevent this situation from happening again. If you have ANY questions, just call.
